Obituary

Aileen E. Johnson passed away on January 8, 2026, after a brief illness, at the age of 93.

Aileen was born on March 20, 1932, in Seattle, Washington to Mary and Joe Malnati. She grew up in Kent, Washington, and lived there until she attended Washington State University.

She married Donald H. Johnson on August 16, 1952. They were married for 64 years until Don's passing in 2017. They settled in Mount Vernon and started their business, McBeath Glass. Aileen helped in the business, and she and Don retired in 1992.

Aileen had a deep faith in the Catholic Church and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church since 1960. She served for 5 years as Chairwoman of the church guild and served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.

Aileen and Don were charter members of Skagit Golf and Country Club. She golfed for over 40 years and played at many courses. Her most memorable round of golf was during a trip to Europe. While in Scotland, she played a round at St. Andrews!

Aileen volunteered at Skagit Valley Hospital, for the Republican Party, and with the Cora Jenning Guild for Children's Hospital.

Her 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren brought her endless joy. She and Don attended many school and sporting events for each of their grandchildren. They also took each of them to the Seattle Children's Theatre for many seasons and always ended the adventure with dinner in Seattle.

This past Christmas was especially exciting for Aileen as she got to spend time with her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.

When Aileen was only 16, she worked at a Bank after school and during the summer.

Something must have clicked in her on that job because she became quite savvy in the Stock Market in her later years. She was also the consummate hostess of endless gatherings at the Johnson home. She may have been less than 5 feet tall, but she was a BIG presence!

Aileen loved the Mariners! She knew every player and could spout stats better than the announcer. She and Don had enjoyed attending spring training in Arizona for many years.

Aileen was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her brother, Robert; her parents, her sister, Gloria; and her grandson, Graham Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Gail (Mark) Fredlund and her son, Mark (Pam) Johnson. Grandchildren: Jennifer Fredlund (Pete), Jay Fredlund (Nate}, Eric Fredlund (Chelsea), Blake Johnson (Chris), Anna Johnson and Cameron Johnson. Great-grandchildren: Reagan, Hazel, and Archer.

Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on Thursday, January 15th at 12:15 p.m. with inurnment at Hawthorne Cemetery.

Special thanks to Rosie Hulbert and her crew of loving caregivers who took care of Aileen for these past 4 years. Thank you also to Hospice of the Northwest for their care.
