Obituary

Alan "Pat" Burton Brown, Jr., passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 13, 2023, at the age of eighty-eight.

Pat was born on March 17, 1935, in Washington, D.C. to Alan and Doris Brown. He grew up in Virginia along with his brother Michael and sister Barbara. After graduating from George Washington High School at 16 years old, Pat attended the University of Virginia, School of Engineering for a year before entering the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he decided to join the Air Force as a navigator-bombardier. He was assigned to the Strategic Air Command after Diana pinned on his wings. They moved to Missouri and Pat became a 1st Lieutenant, then Captain in the U.S. Air Force, spending the next few years traveling the world in his B-47 planes. He later joined the Air Force Reserves and then the Air National Guard.

Pat married the love of his life, Diana, on June 8, 1957. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in June. Pat and Diana were blessed with four children: Jeffrey Alan, Stephen Frederick, Shelby Marie, and Laurie Suzanne.

Pat worked as a fuel cell scientist at Allis-Chalmers in Milwaukee until he became a Boeing engineer in Bellevue. The family moved to Washington and Pat earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Washington in 1968. After flying planes for the Air National Guard and Standard Airways for a few years, Pat purchased the San Juan Marina, Inc., in Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington. Diana managed the Mariner restaurant and Pat ran the marina all while raising their busy family.

Pat was a devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was the biggest cheerleader, and never missed a sports game, recital, or birthday. Pat was fearless till the end and never let his age slow him down. He even went skydiving when he was nearly 80 years old!

Pat was a strong man of faith from childhood until his passing. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and devoted much of his time and energy to the church.

Pat will be remembered for the kindness and devotion he showed to his loved ones. Everyone who knew him will remember his positivity and infectious smile. We couldn't have asked for a better father, grandfather, and friend. We will miss him every day, but he will live on in the hearts of all those blessed to know him.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, brother Michael, and son Steve. Pat is survived by his wife, Diana; sister Barbara (Kent Telford); son Jeff (daughter in law Joni) children; Ian, Cortney, Holden, Gavin, Garret; daughter Shelby and children Mitchel, Whisper; daughter Laurie (Todd Cooley) and children Jessica, Kyle, Alexa, Lacey and 4 great grandchildren.

Pat's service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ in Mount Vernon at 11am Saturday, October 21, 2023.
