Andrea Vargas Aparicio

Andrea Vargas Aparicio was born July 31 1954 in Ziracuaretivo, Michoacán, Mexico to parents Esther Aparicio Bueno and Vicente Vargas Montolla. She was the third of seven children. She had a lifelong love for the simple pleasures in life - cooking, dancing, crochet, enjoying chocolate, and spending time with her loved ones.

When Andrea and her son were looking for greater opportunities, in 1997, they made the move to the United States. In Ziracuaretivo, Andrea had to say goodbye to her siblings and mother. Additionally Andrea had to say her goodbyes to her late father and her daughter, who had passed from childhood illness. This was not the first testament to Andrea’s strength, bravery, and determination; nor was it her last.

She was first recognized in her community by others as Doña Andrea. She dedicated her time to working and helping provide for her family. Andrea worked in several Skagit farms picking and packing produce. During her time working on these farms she began forming relationships with coworkers. On her days off she found time to help other workers, and began caring for their children to help keep her tight knit community running. As time went on, more people searched for childcare, and Andrea was there, ready and willing. For over 20 years she ensured she provided families with loving and affordable childcare. This love and dedication is where her recognition to others as “abuelita” began. Her dedication to helping those in need didn’t stop at helping parents keep jobs to provide for their own families. She ensured children were cared for in countless ways, so much so that she went on to be recognized by the Washington Department of Children, Youth, and Families as an "unsung hero" for National Parenthood leadership month. Despite being in and out of the hospital for ongoing health issues, Andrea was able to attend the award ceremony in Olympia where she was honored for her contributions to the lives of so many children and families.

Andrea passed away at home, surrounded by family, on September 16, 2026 at 1:27 am. She was preceded in death by her parents Esther and Vicente, brother Rafael, sister Margarita, and daughter Maria de Los Angeles. She is survived by her four brothers, Juan, Felipe, Ismael, and Neftali; son Juan; grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In addition to her immediate family, Andrea leaves behind many nieces and nephews, countless young people who were family in her heart, and an entire community that she loved.

All those who knew and loved Andrea are invited to join her family in celebrating her life. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, September 22nd, from 4:00pm - 8:00pm at Hawthorne Funeral Home & Memorial Park. 1825 E College Way, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.

In accordance with Andrea’s lifelong faith, a funeral mass will be held. Please join us on Wednesday, September 23rd, from 1-3 pm at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church 400 N 15th St, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. Following the formal service, there will be potluck style Celebration of Life at Summit Park Grange Hall 8716 Stevenson Rd, Anacortes, WA 98221. The family invites you to join us, bring a dish to share, and enjoy music and time with loved ones as she would have wanted.

Andrea Vargas Aparicio nació el 31 de julio de 1954 en Ziracuaretivo, Michoacán, México, hija de Esther Aparicio Bueno y Vicente Vargas Montolla. Fue la tercera de siete hermanos. A lo largo de su vida, disfrutó de los placeres sencillos: cocinar, bailar, tejer a ganchillo, comer chocolate y pasar tiempo con sus seres queridos.

Cuando Andrea y su hijo estuvieron listos para buscar mejores oportunidades, en 1997, se mudaron a los Estados Unidos. En Ziracuaretivo, Andrea tuvo que separarse de sus hermanos y de su madre. También tenía que partirse de su padre fallecido y de su hija, quien fue sepultada tras fallecer a causa de una enfermedad infantil. Esta no fue la primera prueba de la fortaleza, valentía y determinación de Andrea, ni tampoco la última.

En su comunidad, la gente empezó a conocerla como Doña Andrea. Ella dedicó su tiempo a trabajar y a ayudar a mantener a su familia. Trabajó en varias granjas del condado de Skagit recolectando y empacando productos agrícolas. Durante su tiempo en el campo, fue estrechando lazos con sus compañeros de trabajo. En sus días libres, encontraba tiempo para ayudar a otros trabajadores dedicados, cuidando de sus hijos y contribuyendo así a la cohesión y el bienestar de su comunidad. Con el paso del tiempo, más personas buscaron servicios de cuidado niño, y Andrea siempre estuvo allí, dispuesta a ayudar. Durante más de 20 años, brindó a las familias un cuidado de niños cariñoso y asequible. Fue precisamente ese amor y esa dedicación lo que hizo que todos empezaran a llamarla cariñosamente "abuelita". Su compromiso de ayudar a los demás no se limitaba a facilitar que los padres conservaran sus empleos para mantener a sus familias; se aseguraba de cuidar a los niños de innumerables maneras, hasta el punto de ser reconocida por el Departamento de Niños, Jóvenes y Familias del estado de Washington como una "heroína anónima" durante el Mes Nacional del Liderazgo de los Padres. A pesar de las constantes idas y venidas al hospital debido a problemas de salud persistentes, Andrea logró asistir a la ceremonia de entrega de premios en Olympia, donde fue homenajeada por sus contribuciones a la vida de tantos niños y familias.

Andrea falleció en su hogar, rodeada de su familia, el 16 de septiembre de 2026 a la 1:27 a. m. Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres, Esther y Vicente; su hermano Rafael; su hermana Margarita; y su hija, María de los Ángeles. Le sobreviven sus cuatro hermanos —Juan, Felipe, Ismael y Neftalí—, su hijo Juan, nietos y bisnietos. Además de su familia directa, Andrea deja tras de sí a numerosos sobrinos, a incontables jóvenes que consideraba parte de su familia y a toda una comunidad a la que amaba.

Se invita a todos aquellos que conocieron y quisieron a Andrea a acompañar a su familia para celebrar su vida. El velorio tendrá lugar el martes 22 de septiembre, de 4:00 p. m. a 8:00 p. m., en Hawthorne Funeral Home & Memorial Park (1825 E College Way, Mount Vernon, WA 98273).

En consonancia con la fe que Andrea profesó toda su vida, se oficiará una misa de funeral. Les invitamos a acompañarnos el miércoles 23 de septiembre, de 1:00 p. m. a 3:00 p. m., en la Iglesia Católica Romana de la Inmaculada Concepción (Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church), ubicada en 400 N 15th St, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. Tras la ceremonia formal, se llevará a cabo una celebración de su vida con una comida compartida (estilo *potluck*) en el Summit Park Grange Hall (8716 Stevenson Rd, Anacortes, WA 98221). La familia les invita a unirse, traer un platillo para compartir y disfrutar de la música y la compañía de los seres queridos, tal como ella habría deseado.
