Obituary

Anna Maria Nystuen, 85, of St. Cloud, MN, passed away on March 12, 2025, at Virginia Mason in Seattle, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 5, 1940, in Tjimahi, Java, Indonesia, to Cornelis and Christina (Van Dam) Zegstroo, Anna's early life was marked by historical upheaval. Her father served in the Royal Dutch Army, stationed in Indonesia. On March 8, 1942, the residents of Tjimahi and Badjoebadjar were taken to prison camps by Japanese forces. They were liberated in August 1945 by Australian and Canadian soldiers.

In April 1946, Anna, her mother, and two sisters left Indonesia, arriving in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on May 15. She attended grammar school and completed her secondary education there in 1956. The family immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on February 19, 1957, via the SS Groote Beer, and then traveling by train to Quincy, WA. Anna graduated from Quincy High School in 1958, and the family soon moved to Mt. Vernon, WA. She married Loyd Nystuen on January 11, 1960, and they celebrated 50 years of marriage before his passing in September 2010. Anna became a U.S. citizen in 1968.

Anna pursued her passion for nursing, earning her LPN certificate from Skagit Valley College, her RN degree from Everett Community College in 1972, and her BSN from Western. She dedicated her career to caring for others, working at several hospitals.

In 1995, Anna and Loyd moved to Rice, MN, but frequently returned to Washington for camping trips and holidays. After Loyd's passing, Anna moved to St. Cloud and married Chauncey Oleson in 2013. He preceded her in death in April 2024.

Anna is also preceded in death by her parents, sister Jacoba Collins, brother Fritz Zegstroo, and nephews Kelly, Christopher, and Robert Zegstroo. She is survived by her children Christina (Darrell) Coggins, Loyd (Karen) Nystuen, and Clarisa (Daniel) Skudlarek; brothers Cornelis (Joy), Theodorus, and Christiaan (Rebecca) Zegstroo; sisters Johanna (Fred) Kwant and Catharina (Jim) Scott; 10 grandchildren, Miesha (Tom) Dulin, Jacoba (Travis) Gage, Zachariah Coggins, Derek (Megan) Coggins, Tabitha (Jeremy) Wilson, Reuben (Trista) Nystuen, Erin (Chaparro) Rubio, Natasha (Dave) Forsting, Travis Skudlarek, Naomi (Zach) Feia, and 29 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in the United States and Netherlands.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Sedro-Woolley, WA. Anna will be laid to rest on August 18, 2025, at Graham United Methodist Church in Rice, MN, at 1:00 PM.
