Obituary

Arlene Mae Ekle, 85, of Mount Vernon, Washington, passed away on January 6, 2012. Arlene was born December 3, 1927 in Billings, Montana to Robert and Hattie Walker. At the age of 13, her father died. In 1944 Arlene, her sister Ethel, and her mother moved to Centralia, Washington. She graduated from Centralia High School and began a long career of work; she worked mostly as a secretary, but was willing to take on any task. Because of her positive personality, she never had any trouble finding a job. While working in Spokane, she met and married Chester Arthur Madson. This union resulted in Arlene's only child, Cathy. The marriage was not successful however, and resulted in a divorce. Arlene returned to Centralia and began a long career with the state of Washington. While working at the women's prison in Purdy, she met Alex Ekle and they were married in 1975. At that time, they were living in Tacoma. Arlene was able to retire in 1982 and enjoyed her retirement very much. After Alex's retirement in 1990 they eventually moved back to his home area of Mount Vernon, Washington. Arlene greatly enjoyed living in this area, and the long trips they took across the United States and Canada. Her last few years were difficult, fighting cancer and enduring pain. But she always maintained a good attitude and was not one to complain. Arlene is survived by her husband Alex, daughter Cathy Kenison, stepsons David and Kenneth Ekle, grandchildren Nathan Kenison, Lauren Cox, Samantha Kenison, Taylor Ekle, Hayley Ekle, and Spencer Ekle, sister Ethel Gahan, and nieces and nephews Barby Grinaker, David Gahan, Gary Gahan, and Rick Gahan. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 11th at 2:00 pm at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2015 East Blackburn Road, Mount Vernon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Lutheran. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Mira Vista Care Center and Home Place Care Center for their excellent care and understanding.
