Barbara Berkland passed away peacefully at the age of 89 at her home in Bow in the evening of July 2nd, 2007. Her life began early on a Sunday morning, April 13th, 1919 in Burlington, Washington. She was the youngest of five children, born to her proud and loving parents, Nolie and Annie Kerr of the Edison Community. It was while attending school in Edison, when Barbara met her future husband, Simer Berkland. The two were married in early 1940, and soon after started a dairy farm from scratch on the outskirts of Edison. In 1946, Barbara and Simer shared their life with the birth of their only child and daughter, Vicki. Years later, the Berkland family converted that dairy farm from cows to crops and it became the bustling hub of Skagit County's Pea Vining activity, employing dozens of young local adults in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. In May 1981, Barbara lost Simer to a sudden heart attack and he passed away at the age of 64. Left with a fully functioning farm, Barbara handed it over to her Vicki and her husband, Malvert Hampel from Burlington. Together with their two sons, Chris and Matt, the five of them continued farming in the Bow-Edison area until the late 90s. During that time, Barbara pursued her lifelong passion of Antiques. Her fondness and expertise in early American primitive furniture and collectibles grew and she opened up her own shop on T-Loop Road in Bow. This hobby blossomed into a business as she expanded from Bellingham to La Conner, forming new friends along the way and building a distinguished reputation for her admirable taste and celebrated collection. Barbara also took an active interest in reading, stitching, cross wording, and playing Bridge with her dearest friends once a week. But nothing was closer to her heart than her family. She cherished Sunday drives with her husband, Simer, and devoted her entire life to her daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons. Barbara Berkland was a pillar of strength for the Edison community and beyond. Her love and leadership will be missed but never forgotten. She was preceded in passing by her parents, Nolie and Annie Kerr, her sisters, Agnes Esary, Rena Lane, Sis Hall, her brother, Frank "Skuskie" Kerr, her son-in-law, Malvert Hampel, and her beloved husband, Simer Berkland. Her life will be remembered and cherished by her daughter, Vicki Hampel, her grandsons, Chris and Matt Hampel, her niece, Clair Mapes, her nephew, Dan Northcutt, her grandnieces, Michele Power, Jody Louia, Donna Medema, and her longest loving friend, Margaret Graff. All our welcome to celebrate the life of Barbara Berkland at a graveside service, 1:15 pm on Tuesday, July 8th, at the Bow Cemetery on Bow-Cemetery Road. Followed immediately by a Memorial Service at 2:00 pm at the Edison Lutheran Church, 14201 Church Road, Bow, WA 98232. There will be a reception after the service.
