Obituary

Barbara was born in Mount Vernon, WA, on September 28, 1943, to David D. and Agnes M. (Torset) Sawyer.  She attended first grade in Burlington and then moved to Mount Vernon where she attended Roosevelt, Lincoln and Madison grade schools and Mount Vernon High School.

She married Melvin H. Hall, Jr. in June of 1969, and moved upriver to Newhalem. Her family now included her three daughters and Melvin's son and daughter to which they added a baby girl three years later making them a family of eight.

She is survived by her six adult children, Melvin (Harvey) Hall III and wife Martha of So. Carolina, Roseann (Hall) Roper and husband Sam of Lake Stevens, Debbra (Fry) Sligar & husband Milo of Mt. Vernon, Jacqueline (Fry) Bridge and husband Timothy of Sedro Woolley, Lori (Fry) Sidhu of Snohomish, Melinda (Hall) Hollifield and her partner Randy Norris of Concrete, twenty-three grandchildren and thirty-four + great grandchildren.

She is also survived by sister in-law Ruth Turner, brother Jeff Turner (and wife Sherry), all of Mount Vernon, sister Michelle Fraser (and husband Jim) of Kirkland. In addition, one brother-in-law Bill Johnson (and wife Louise) of Mount Vernon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin "Mr. Wonderful", Father David D. Sawyer, two brothers Thomas D. Sawyer & Rick Turner, sister Nancy Wood, brother in-law James Wood, and her second father Richard E. Turner, her Mother Agnes Turner.

During her almost 30 years upriver she raised her large family while working part time on the Skagit Tours and driving 3 hrs. round trip for 3 yrs of night school at Skagit Valley College to attain her Associates in Arts degree. This led to a permanent accounting position with Seattle City Light in 1981 until her retirement in March of 1998.

While in Newhalem, she belonged to many clubs: Newh. Rifle Club, Pinochle Club, Ladies Birthday Club, was a Brownie Girl Scout Leader, Teachers Aide at the Newhalem Grade School, PTA Secretary, and her children's most avid fan as they played and cheered at games.  She enjoyed raising her children, swimming laps, visiting friends,

dancing to country western music, and the way of life on "The Skagit".

(The upriver communities of Newhalem/Diablo were referred to as "The Skagit" as are two of the last company towns and were owned by Seattle City Light.)

After retiring to Oak Harbor, she enjoyed spending more time with her children and grandchildren and especially loved "Game Nights" with them.  She also was an avid reader, loved traveling, visiting, playing cards, watching the sunsets and boat traffic on the straits, and learning new things.

She and her husband Melvin were true "Soul Mates" and loved spending time together.  She usually referred to him as "Mr. Wonderful".  They both will be greatly miss.
