Obituary

Beatrice Amee Horton, of Mount Vernon, passed away after a brief illness, with the loving presence of family by her side. She was 93. Bea was born in Spokane, Washington and she graduated from Rogers High School. She then enrolled at Eastern Washington University. At EWU she met the love of her life, Arch Horton. They married in 1940 at Grand Coulee. They were married for 70 years. Arch served in WWII. After the war, they moved to Pullman where they built a house and lived until Arch graduated from WSU in 1950. They then moved to the west side of the state where Arch worked at Boeing for the next thirty years while Bea raised their two boys. When the boys were older, she worked as an accountant at two different construction firms. They lived in Shorewood (Burien) from 1958 until 2007, and were founding members of St. Paul's of Shorewood Lutheran Church. They remained active in the church until health restricted their attendance. They then moved to Mt. Vernon, WA. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed bowling and swimming, and especially taking care of her grandchildren in her later years. Bea participated in the PTA and was a President of the PTA at Shorewood Elementary School. Her baking and cooking skills were enjoyed by all. A raspberry Jell-O recipe is fondly remembered and remains a staple of Horton family gatherings She volunteered with the American Cancer Society for many years. She provided cancer patients with their transportation for their medical treatments. She was a survivor of three bouts of breast cancer herself. She was the first of two daughters and one son born to Emily Georgia (Sever) Drury and Charles Winslow Drury. Bea was preceded in death by her brother, (Charles Marion Drury), parents, husband (Arch), and sister (Sallyann DeGuire). She will be greatly missed by her two sons; David Horton (Gaylynne) and Doug Horton (Teri); six grandchildren: Michael, Melissa (Jason), Matthew, David (Ashley), Lisa and Katie, and great grandchild Orelia. We would especially like to thank the doctors and nurses at Skagit Valley Hospital who helped Bea and the family: (Dr. Gutshall / Dr. Kendregan), Where the Heart Is in Burlington, Visiting Angels of Burlington, and Meals on Wheels of Mt. Vernon. There will be no service. Her remains will be inurned at Hawthorne Memorial Park in Mount Vernon, WA in the Veterans' Section, next to Arch's.
