Obituary

Betty L. Schaletzke, age 78, of Mount Vernon, WA, went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 27, 2011 at Mira Vista Care Center. Betty was born on September 16, 1932 near Eagle Butte, South Dakota to parents John and Allie VanderPol; she was the youngest of nine children. She moved to Lynden, WA at the age of 15 with her parents. Betty married Darwin Geerdes on May 10, 1951 in Lynden, WA. From that union were born four children. On November 11, 1977, Betty married Bill Schaletzke in Mount Vernon, WA. She was a devoted wife and homemaker. Betty was a CNA at Evergreen Terrace and also worked at Sears in Lynden. She later retired from Sears in Bellingham, WA in 1990. In the past couple of years Bill and Betty moved back to Mount Vernon to be closer to family as her health declined. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Betty always enjoyed camping and RVing with her husband Bill, making many friends at various locations as a result. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harry, Gerritt, Lyle, Alfred, and Bill, and sisters Jean Vonallman and Tootie Maas. She was also preceded in death by her step-son Larry Schaletzke. She is survived by her husband, Bill; children Geralynn and Phil KuyKendall of Chico, CA, Monte and LuAnn Geerdes of Mount Vernon, WA, Mike and Cherie Geerdes of Sedro Woolley, WA, and Leah and Dale Visser of Mount Vernon WA; she is also survived by step-children William Schaletzke of Oregon and Monica and husband Bob Parker of Elma, WA; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; a sister Johanna Libolt, sister-in-law Bernice VanderPol, and brother-in-law Egbert Maas all of Lynden, WA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the benevolent fund of First Christian Reformed Church in Mount Vernon, WA. Betty will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren that she loved and enjoyed very much. Viewing will be from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Hawthorne Funeral Home 1825 E. College Way, Mount Vernon. There will be a private graveside service. The memorial service will be held at First Christian Reformed Church in Mount Vernon, WA on Friday, March 4, 2011 at 2:30 p.m.
