Obituary

Beverly would like you to know that her work here is done. She took her last breath in peace on June 16, 2022. She was 94 years old and leaves us rich in memories. Beverly's story starts when she was born on October 14, 1927, in Portland, Oregon, to Karlen & Wava Rothlisberg. Bev was the first and only grandchild in the family for several years and was lovingly spoiled by her Grandma Oheler. She was sixteen years old in 1943 when most of the young men were off to war so she set her sights on attending college. She attended Western Washington College of Education in Bellingham and graduated with a bachelor's degree in teaching. She met her soon-to-be husband, Herbert Walser, who was at college on the GI Bill after the war. He was a 6' 6" tall, dark and handsome man. Bev was smitten! They soon married after college and honeymooned at Crater Lake, Oregon.

They lived in Conway, WA, among several Swedish pioneers who settled an area called Cedardale. Beverly learned how to make the BEST Swedish pancakes from her next-door neighbor, Ellen Johnson. Beverly taught public grade school children for over 35 years both in the Conway and Mount Vernon school districts. Her husband, Herb, also enjoyed teaching and eventually became the principal of LaVenture Middle School.

Beverly & Herb had four children: Karlen, Margaret, David and Mark. Her fondest and most favorite activity was watching her children's sports games. Whether it be football, basketball, baseball, or swimming, Bev cheered them on with great enthusiasm! She was so proud when her son David played football in the Pioneer Bowl game in 1981 and won!  David graduated from Idaho State University and is in the Hall of Fame for football. He is now a retired science teacher from LaVenture Middle School. Bev's oldest son, Karlen, graduated from Washington State University in Agricultural Economics and is now a Plant Breeder and Pacific NW manager for Taylor Farms. Bev's only daughter, Margaret, graduated from the University of Washington and is a cardiac nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bellingham. Mark, Bev's youngest son, graduated from California's Long Beach State University and now owns Keystone Remodeling located in Georgia.

During the summer breaks from school, Bev & Herb grew blueberries on a farm near their home. Bev was always in charge of the "picking" crew who were often children from around the neighborhood. Beverly had her hands full when they often played around more than they actually picked berries! She also carved out a couple of weeks each summer to vacation on the Oregon Coast with family members. Bev loved to collect agate rocks and had a keen eye for spotting them on the beach.

The Christmas holiday season was also a favorite time for Beverly. She would bake over a dozen different kinds of cookies each year and prepare an elaborate fresh crab dinner on Christmas eve for the family. She also loved to celebrate with her best friends at Emmanual Baptist Church. They would gather and have several Christmas parties at each other's houses. There were always lively conversations with laughter while playing a card game called "Rook." She also served as secretary at Emmanual Baptist Church for many years and taught summer Vacation Bible School.

Grandma Beverly has nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren spread out across the country from Alaska to Washington, DC. She will always be remembered as an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend and she leaves us now to have a reunion with the family and friends she has not seen in a long time. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place in heaven where love and laughter are guaranteed.

Loved ones that will miss Beverly until they meet again, are her children and (grandchildren): Karlen & Connie Walser (Annie, Eric) and great-granddaughter Evelyn; Margaret Walser & Corbin Ball (Leo), David & Lori Walser (Ray, Derrick, Polly & Melvin) and great-granddaughter Cora; Mark & Sue Walser (Rachel, Andrew).

Everyone is invited to a brief ceremony to celebrate Beverly's life at Hawthorne Funeral Home, 1825 E. College Way, Mount Vernon, WA on Monday, June 27 th at 3pm where Beverly will be laid to rest. Please join us.
