Obituary

Carlos Garcia Carlos was born November 17, 1944 in Toppenish, WA to Jesse and Mary Garcia; he passed away November 15, 2008 in Seattle, at the VA Medical Center. Carlos' family moved to the Skagit County area when he was 13. He attended Mount Vernon schools until enlisting in the US Navy at the age of 17, where he completed his education. He served 8 years in the Navy, including 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. While in the Navy, Carlos met Cathy Ramirez, they have been together since 1966. In July of 1980, Carlos and Cathy were married in Moscow, ID between baseball games, the reception was held in the Washington State University Baseball parking lot. (this is an example of Carlos' love for baseball) Carlos was a staple in the baseball community, since 1971. In 1995 Cathy and Carlos established Garcia Enterprises, placing staffing needs to local farmers. Carlos and Cathy had many businesses serving the needs of Skagit Valley Families. His businesses worked closely with Draper Valley Farms. Carlos was the Latino Business Man of the Year in 2005. Carlos was very involved with the Red Cross National Disaster Team, and also at the local level. He was one of the first Citizens on Patrol community members, the original class. He was a foster parent and worked with the probation department and even attended a Frank Zappa concert. He was honored at the Dream Field in 2008. Carlos loved watching his grandkids playing sports, and watching those he coached now coaching kids. Carlos loved fishing, especially with his family and co-workers. Carlos is survived by his wife, Cathy; children: Ed (Leah) Serna of Sedro Woolley and their son Travis, Jon Serna of Mount Vernon, and Chelsea of Lynnwood and their children Chloe, and Cameron, Robert (Kerri) Serna of Mount Vernon and their children, Ashley and Jacob; siblings: Dolores (Larry) Smith of Concrete, Jesse Garcia, Jr. of Mount Vernon, Anthony (Verna) Garcia of Mount Vernon, Amelia (Tony) Rocha of Mount Vernon, Catherine (Rudy) De La Cruz of Mount Vernon, Jerry Garcia of Ephrata, WA, Julie (Don) Keltz of Mount Vernon, George (Betty) Garcia of Burlington; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and his extended family of his employees. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Richard Garcia. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Carlos' name to The Dream Field Foundation, in care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, PO Box 398 Mount Vernon, WA 98273. The Celebration of Carlos' life will be held Saturday, November 22, 2008, 11:00 am at Bethany Covenant Church in Mount Vernon, with a graveside service to follow at Hawthorne Memorial Park.
