Obituary

Daniel Patrick O'Malley was born in Bellingham, WA on January 22, 1939, to John Paul O'Malley and Florence Pauline (Miller) O'Malley.  He was the oldest of three sons.  Dan attended and graduated from Bellingham High School in 1957.  He was the student body Vice President in his senior year and played football during his high school years for John Godfrey.  His yearbook ambition was to play again for Coach Godfrey.

Dan joined the United States Marine Corps after graduating from high school.  At a New Years Eve party on January 1, 1959, while on leave in Bellingham, WA he met up with a high school friend, Darla Mesford.  After a couple of dates, they decided to get engaged and were married 8 months later on August 8, 1959.  They moved to Southern California, where Darla worked for North American Aviation for the next 10 years; Dan finished his time in the USMC, went to Cerritos Junior College where he received a scholarship to Whittier College and played football for Coach John Godfrey, fulfilling his ambition to play again for his old high school coach.

He got his first teaching and coaching job at South Junior High School in Anaheim, California, where he made lifelong friendships… Dan and Darla had a daughter, Kelly, in 1964, and a son, Danny, in 1966.

They moved back to their home state of Washington, in 1969, where he accepted a high school teaching and coaching job in Darrington.  He taught math and history, and many other subjects, plus coaching football, basketball, girls' softball, baseball, volleyball, and started track and wrestling.  Their youngest daughter, Shannon, was born in 1970, where they lived in Oso, WA on a 6-acre farm.

Dan finished his teaching career at Arlington High School, where he was also the assistant coach in football.  After his "retirement" he continued to substitute teach for the Arlington School District until 2013.

Dan and Darla enjoyed traveling in their motorhome for a number of years after 2005 and spent some years going to spring training in Peoria, AZ to watch the Seattle Mariners.  They spent a lot of their time at Ocean City in Washington, with their little dog, Rosy, and their grandchildren.

Dan was preceded in death by his half-sister Shirley Dana, father John Paul O'Malley, mother Florence Pauline O'Malley, and his younger brother John Miles (Mick) O'Malley.

He leaves behind his wife Darla of 65 years, son Daniel Patrick (Jamie) O'Malley, daughters Kelly Marie O'Malley and Shannon Kathleen O'Malley (Mike) Dahl.  He is also survived by grandchildren; Ryan Steen, Eli Steen, Tekla (Jacquon) Bailey, Jake Daniel O'Malley, Katie Noelle O'Malley, Brianna Lynn O'Malley, and Karra Marie Smith.  As well as brother Thom (Gayle) O'Malley, sister-in-law Virginia O'Malley, 7 great grandchildren and many nephews, nieces, cousins, close friends, and Ceili, too.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later time.
