Daniel Edward Sjodin went to be with his Lord on Friday, August 24, 2007 after a short duration of pneumonia and congestive heart failure. He was born on July 3, 1922 in his grandfather's little house near his parents' home in Hoogdal, Washington (a community north of Sedro-Woolley co-settled by his parents, grandparents and three other families after immigrating from Sweden). He was one of ten children and attended a one-room schoolhouse in Hoogdal which still exists today. Their first house in Hoogdal burned, so the large family rebuilt on 65 acres and farmed to provide food and income during the depression and pre-war years, with Danny, his brothers Art and Roy clearing the wooded property by hand and oxen. Danny attended school in Hoogdal through the 8th grade and graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School where he was the sports editor of "The Cub" and excelled in English, history, art and journalism. Danny served in the United States Navy and attended business school in Boston. He served on a sub-chaser during the Battle of Normandy in France. Returning to the U.S. after his service, he worked for the Courier Times in Sedro-Woolley and then the Sedro-Woolley Post Office for 38 years as a postal clerk. On July 19, 1952, he married Joanne Adelle White, who would be by his side for the next 52 years. They raised three children and made their home in Sedro-Woolley. Danny and Joanne attended and served in leadership at the Township Street Church of Christ for many years, raising their children to know and serve God. They built their family home, always known as "the yellow rambler on Township Street". Danny grew a large garden and tended his rhododendrons and azaleas at the home he and Joanne shared for 50 years. He also enjoyed traveling in the RV with Joanne, family, and friends on trips across the U.S. and cheering for the Mariners. Anyone who ever received a letter or card from Danny knew of his beautiful handwriting. He enjoyed sketching, and painting his home (always yellow, of course!) Danny and Joanne eventually made their home at Country Meadow Village in Sedro-Woolley where he remained until his recent hospitalization. While at Country Meadow, Danny was surrounded by friends and neighbors known for years. He was well cared for by loving staff and enjoyed visits from friends and family, playing BINGO, going on outings, reading, watching The Price Is Right, and "The Wheel", Mariners' games and was an ace crossword puzzler. Danny is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Chris Weir of Sedro-Woolley and their children Scott of Sedro-Woolley and Melinda and Jason Thome of Kirkland; son and daughter-law, Darryl and Joyce Sjodin of Marysville and their children Jeremy and Jordan; and daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Bruce Bock of Bellingham. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Dorothy Sjodin; sister-in-law Barbara Coulter; and many cherished nieces and nephews. Danny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joanne, on October 9, 2004; parents Hans and Hulda Sjodin; brothers John, Hans and Art; sisters Ida, Hannah, Alma, Lilly, and Agnes. We feel joy and peace in the assurance that dad is spending eternity with his Heavenly Father, our mom and their infant daughter Linda, and family and friends who have gone on before them. A Memorial Service and reception to follow will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Bethel Assembly of God, 805 Township Street, Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Jim Cannon officiating. Memorials may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 152, Mt. Vernon, WA 98273 or a charity of your choice
