Obituary

Deborah was born in Seattle on August 13, 1952.  On January 18, 2023, the world lost Deborah, an extraordinary human, a loving mother, grandmother, and sister at the age 70.

Deborah valued many things but most of all, she valued her family.  At just 16 years old, Deborah met and married her first love, William Price.  She later married Alan Brown and delivered one daughter.  She became widowed and later in life, reconnected with William Price. She is survived by her daughter, Jammie Novak and her husband Matt; her grandchildren, Jada Jenkins and James Novak; her siblings, Danny Vegsund Weston and his wife Cece, Donna Vegsund Mataya and her husband Bob, Deanna Vegsund Noia and her husband George; her nieces and nephews, Jesse Weston, Morgan and Mitch Mataya, Marisa Veal, Lindsey and Brittney Gard and Kris Noia; her one great love William Price and her dearest friend Patty Rafferty.  She was predeceased by her mother, Effie Hutchinson Vegsund; her father, John Vegsund; and her brother Dick Vegsund.

Deborah was an incredibly capable and independent woman.  She built her own home and raised her daughter as a single mom.  If something was broken, there were no calls to a handyman as she fixed it herself.  She was a fierce feminist and cared deeply about human rights.  She was a hippie at heart.  If there was a protest relative to a cause she cared about, Deborah was often there supporting the cause.  She very much valued family, diversity, and community.  She was fearless, courageous, and strong.  She was absolutely that person who impacted lives and left them better than they were before they encountered her.

Testimony to her strength, some of Deborah's jobs included working construction and driving a semi-truck.  She later attended Edmonds Community College earning her Adult High School diploma in 1984.  She continued her education and in 1987 she earned her Associate in Arts and Science degree, an Associate in Technical Arts degree in Casework and Counseling and a certificate in Alcoholism Studies.  She continued her education at University of Washington where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1989, subsequently serving the chemical dependency field for most of her career.  She loved learning and often commented that she'd be a professional student if she won the lottery.

In her spare time, Deborah particularly enjoyed gardening in her lovely yard, birding, scoping out antique stores, reading, camping and embarking on spontaneous road trips.  If it was a sunny day, she was usually wearing her overalls, working in her yard.  She enjoyed attending our local farmer's markets and scouting out fresh produce at our local farm stands.  Deborah was an explorer and an adventurer.  She loved to hook-up her trailer and take off in her truck in search of an epic adventure with her beloved dog, Bunny.

This world was a better place with Deborah in it and her family and friends will miss her so very much.

Her Celebration of Life is scheduled for March 3 rd at noon at Hawthorne Funeral Home at 1825 E College Way, Mount Vernon, WA, 98273. Casual wear only.  Be comfortable.  Tie-dye wear is encouraged.  Lunch and dessert will be served.  Please come prepared to share your favorite memories of Deborah.
