IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dennis Merrill
Thompson
September 19, 1946 – January 19, 2017
Dennis Merrill Thompson passed away in his home on January 19, 2017 surrounded by his loved ones. Dennis is predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Alberta Thompson. He is survived by his son, AJ, sister, Dianne, and loving partner Fay.
Dennis was born in Seattle, WA on September 19, 1946. He spent his youth in Port Angeles, WA where his parents owned and operated a small motel. At 17 years old Dennis moved to Portland, OR where he joined the military a couple years later on November 22, 1965 at the age of 19. He served as a wireman for 6 years, earning Expert Rifleman in 1968. Dennis was honorably discharged from the military on November 21, 1971.
After leaving the military, Dennis remained in Portland where he began working for Peter's Welding Supply. He was eventually asked to relocate to Burlington, WA to manage Skagit Welding Supply, Central Welding Supply's first acquisition in the early 1980's. For the next 34 ½ years Dennis managed the Burlington branch- but in the words of the company's CEO, he "was the Burlington branch." He was well respected by all of his employees and was a beloved member of the Central Welding family. He created the mold for how a branch should run and was viewed as a fellow owner amongst his peers. Dennis remained at Central Welding, working side by side with his son, AJ, until October 2016.
In his down time, Dennis enjoyed jet skiing on the Columbia River and camping with his friends and family. He was an active member of the American Legion and served as president of the Eagles for one year. Dennis was known for his quiet demeanor and generous nature. He always made sure others were taken care of before worrying about himself. He was a devoted and beloved father; loyal and loving partner; and a highly respected man.
A service for Dennis will be held on Friday, January 27th at 2:00pm at Hawthorne Funeral Home 1825 E. College Way, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
A Celebration of Life reception will be held immediately after the funeral at the American Legion 701 Murdock St. Sedro Woolley, WA 98284.
