Obituary

Diane Lynne Sargent, 75, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2024, at Home Place in Burlington, WA. Diane was born on December 14, 1948, in Providence, Rhode Island.

Diane moved from Rhode Island to Southern California as a child.  She graduated from La Habra Heights High School in California.

In the 1960's her free spirit and adventure for life took her to San Francisco.

In the 1970's she lived in Rockport, WA as a single mom of her 2 children Kevah and Kolby.  Her first job in WA was trapping coyotes for John Rantschler in the Rockport area.   When she later moved to Concrete, WA she started a new job at the local cedar mill packing cedar roofing shakes and shingles for Janicki Hurn shingle and VanderGriff.

Hunting and fishing were some of her hobbies and was a main way to feed her family.

The 1980's were the pinnacle for Diane as she purchased her very first home in the community of Concrete.  It was also when she began her volunteer lifestyle as well as working several long hours to support her family.  She took over the Good Ol' Days parade planning.  One of her most proud moments was creating a softball program at Concrete Middle School for the youth girls.  She spent countless hours fundraising and used her own money to create opportunities for the local kids.  She acquired the materials for a ball field backstop and physically built it with her family. She sourced materials for uniforms and spent several hours sewing and creating some of the best uniforms in the league.  She coached soccer and softball in Concrete for many years.  She also played numerous seasons herself and was rumored to be one of the first females as a pitcher to put backspin on her pitches.

Diane had a goal to join the Skagit County Sheriff's Department as a Corrections Officer.  It took a few attempts to get the job but, she was determined and bested several other applicants to finally land the job of her dreams.  She was employed at the jail for 28 years and went out of her way and spent her own money to make sure the inmates had books and even candy canes for Christmas.  She had a huge heart for "everyone" and her generosity whether monetary or timewise was never-ending in the community, her friends, and her family.

In the 1990's with her kids grown up and out of the house she started focusing on working as much as she could to start setting up for her later years.   She enjoyed spending time with her adult kids and their spouses. She spoiled her grandkids.  She designed and sewed the most amazing masterpiece costumes for her family.

In the 2000"s Diane met the absolute love of her life David Stasel.  They both enjoyed similar hobbies such as hunting and fishing together and all that nature had to offer them. They both had so much in common, from their caring and giving nature, hardworking ethics, handy craftmanship, and love for animals.  They were best friends and very in love.

Eventually one typical workday turned into a tragic life changing circumstance for Diane as she suffered a traumatic brain injury after being attacked by an inmate at the Skagit County Jail and was therefore forced into early retirement due to permanent memory loss and the now required 24/7 care.

Diane's hobbies as an artist were impressively and beautifully apparent in her drawings, woodworking, workmanship, sewing crafts, and how she decorated her home.  She enjoyed dancing and had a beautiful singing voice.

Diane is survived by her sisters Florence (Sargent) Whietbrock and Fran (Sargent) Klovstad, her daughter Kevah Doerge-Jacobsen and her husband Duane Jacobsen, her son Kolby Doerge and his wife Melissa Brandon-Doerge, her grandchildren Jamey Brandon and Blakely Doerge, and the love of her life David Stasel.

Diane was preceded in death by her father Douglas Kaskela, her mother Florence Deming (Sargent), and her stepfather frank Sargent.

A celebration of Life for Diane will be held at Hawthorne Funeral Home and Memorial Park, Mount Vernon, WA on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 1:00pm.
