Donald "Don" Duane Smith, 61, of Bellingham, WA passed away Tuesday January 10, 2012 at The Hospice House in Bellingham surrounded by his family. He was born June 27, 1950 in Mount Vernon, WA in the Old Skagit Valley Hospital to John and Phillis Smith. Don was active throughout his whole life beginning in High School where he was a Northwest District Wrestling Champion in 1968. From Don's first marriage to Merri Westphall he was blessed with his children, son Jeffrey Jason and daughter Heather Jolyn. Don worked hard to provide for his family. In 1975 he became part owner of Germania Dairy Center. In 1984 he opened Lynden Family Video where it remained until 1994. Also during this time Don started Gateway Construction and Gateway Management Services of Lynden Inc. which constructs and manages rental properties. On October 27, 1990 Don married the love of his life Patricia Martinson. Don had a wide range of interests and hobbies, including restoring "classic cars", motorcycle club trips, entertaining and cooking for large groups. He even grew his own vegetables that he canned and provided generously to friends and family. He loved to design and build custom homes. In the past year he attended Christ the King Church in Bellingham. Donald is survived by his wife Pat, son Jeffrey Jason Smith, Lynden, daughter Heather Jolyn Adkinson, Moses Lake, mother, Phillis Smith Wright (Marvin), Mount Vernon, brothers: Ronald Smith (Marlene), McMinnville, OR, Raymond Smith (Cheri), Mount Vernon, sisters: Evelyn Neumann, Bothell, Arlene West (William), Silverdale. Donald had a special family of heart and marriage, Brian Carlson (Tanya) of Marysville, Terry Carlson (Kristin) of Lynden, Jody Watkins (Mick) of Ferndale. Don had nine grandchildren; Macy, Mia, Ryder, Bianca, Patrick, Logan, Jillian, Kyle and Jessi. He left numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Donald was preceded in death by his father John Raymond Smith and brother-in-law Thomas Neumann and both sets of grandparents. Viewing times are 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Saturday 21 January 2012 at Hawthorne Funeral Home and Memorial Park at 1825 E. College Way, Mount Vernon, WA.
