IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald Lloyd
Herbaugh
September 10, 1931 – February 1, 2024
Donald Lloyd Herbaugh, 92, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2024, in Mount Vernon, WA.
Donald was born on September 10, 1931, in Purdum Nebraska.
Donald Herbaugh and his family traveled to Skagit County from Nebraska in 1936 when he was just 5 years old during the Great Depression. Making the journey in a 28 Ford pickup alongside another family, all 12 children slept under the vehicle at night and were known as "the dirty dozen."
During his school years, Don attended Samish School, Avon School, Lincoln School then Mount Vernon High School, graduating in 1950. Shortly after graduating, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War.
Don began civilian life working as a 2nd generation Darigold farmer on Ovenell Road. A few years later, he worked for Shell Oil Company in the warehouse of their Anacortes refinery. He retired from Tesoro after 30 years in 1994.
A man of many hobbies and interests, Don enjoyed square dancing, camping, fishing, watching the game on TV (baseball, basketball, or football, but basketball was his favorite), traveling with his wife, enjoying several cruises, and spending time in nature. You'd never find him far from a Louis L'Amour book, although Zane Grey would do in a pinch. He was also an avid and gifted woodworker and carpenter, building many beautiful pieces for his family over the years.
Don was equally devoted to serving his community throughout his life and well into his retirement. He served on the Board for Tesoro Credit Union, later to become the North Coast Credit Union, and the Skagit Valley Herald Christmas Fund. He was a founding member of the Skagit Golden K Kiwanis Club in 1996 where he served as President from 1997 to 1998 and from 1999 to 2000. He received the George F Hixson Award for his service. Always available to help, Don served as a general handyman at the Stonebridge Community, to take care of community problems. He also served on the Board for Stonebridge.
He was on the council at Avon United Methodist Church, and later attended the Community Covenant Church in Clear Lake.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Lucille Herbaugh, his wife Kathleen Herbaugh, his son Richard Herbaugh, and sisters Zelma Herbaugh, Jean Marshell, Vivian Pells, Georgia Justman, and Leila Shaffer. He is survived by his wife Helen Herbaugh, son Roger Herbaugh (Anne), daughters Melanie Johnson, Donelda Lea (Rick), Deborah Arntzen, Kim Blatz (Eric), thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, his brother Lyle Herbaugh, and many nieces and nephews.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
