Obituary

Donald A. Krieger (Don) passed away April 3, 2016 at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, WA, with his family at his side, following a brief battle with cancer. Don was born June 4, 1937 in Mount Vernon, to Henry and Josephine (Lewis) Krieger.

Don attended school in Mount Vernon. He married the love of his life, Carmen Gutierrez, on September 18, 1959 in Seattle. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1966. As a member of the 4th Armored Division, he participated in Exercise Winter Shield II (1961) at the Grafenwoehr-Hohenfels training area in Germany. He was baptized at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon on June 23, 1963. Also in 1963, he began a career with Northwest Olivine, which later became Unimin Corporation, where he continued until retirement in 2009. Don and Carmen raised their family in Mount Vernon, and later lived in Concrete. After retirement, Don and Carmen moved to Big Lake, where Don loved caring for rescued animals (his "babies").

Don was an avid fan of the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks. He loved to listen to John Denver, often singing along. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and going for drives. He particularly liked to visit Rosario Beach, where he spent many summers as a child with his family.   Don loved being surrounded by the joyful chaos that came with frequent family events, attended by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other extended family. Don had a huge heart and would do anything for his loved ones, as long as he wasn't expected to be the center of attention.

Don is survived by his loving wife Carmen of Mount Vernon and six children: Ruthie Griffith (John) of Mount Vernon; Lisa Shultz (Maurice) of Tok, AK; Vera Rogers (Jeff) of Mount Vernon; Dawna Krieger (Frank) of Mount Vernon; Donald H. Krieger of Mount Vernon; and Michael Krieger of Mount Vernon. He is also survived by his sisters Betty Connelly of Oregon, Donna Allen of Mount Vernon, Hazel Anderson (Bill) of Mount Vernon, and Lorraine Breathour of Arizona, as well as 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his father Henry, mother Josephine, and brother Delmer Krieger.
