Donald (Red) Poppe passed away at the age of 94 on Monday July 1, 2024.
He was born January 18, 1930 in Lincolnville, Kansas. His family relocated to the Skagit Valley in the mid 1930's where he grew up and graduated from Mount Vernon High School and Skagit Valley College. Donald served in the Korean War before starting his own business, Poppe Insurance Company for 30 years.
Donald was a beloved husband, father and uncle. He was a good man and was well known in the Skagit Valley and had many friends. He enjoyed volunteering and being a part of his community. While his sons attended Immaculate Conception School, Donald was an active volunteer there. He coached basketball and was in charge of the school bus services. He enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. He was an avid follower of the Mount Vernon high school basketball games and tournaments with his friends. Before the closure of the Burlington Mall, Donald and his friends spent years walking countless miles in the mall.
Donald was the son of George H. Poppe and Frieda (Kahns) Poppe. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Melvin, Ervin, Lyle, George and his sister Geraldine. Donald was married to Ruby Poppe before her passing. Donald and Ruby had three sons, David, Michael and Brian. Brian passed recently.
Donald will be laid to rest in Hawthorne Memorial Park in Mount Vernon and per his wishes, a private family burial will take place.
