IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward Frank
Mcgrath
November 4, 1948 – March 16, 2021
Edward Frank McGrath died March 16, 2021 at his residence, surrounded by family. He was born November 4, 1948 in Seattle, WA, the son of James McGrath and Lucille (Kelm) McGrath. Ed graduated from Anaconda High School in 1967, following graduation he was drafted by the Army for the Vietnam War, he served for 2 years, mostly in Germany. He was honorably discharged and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. In his younger years, he worked on a ranch in Montana, and later started a career with Great Northern Railroad (later called Burlington Northern and BNSF). On April 12, 1973 he took Deborah (Debi) Holden out on their first date (they still celebrate this date every year), they were married on June 7,1974. Ed and Debi were blessed to have three daughters, Shannon, Jenelle and Darci. Ed was involved in the Mount Vernon Little League, he coached for a couple years before serving as their president from 1981-1985. He enjoyed coaching the little league players and teaching them life lessons, and love of baseball, all while gaining some friendships that lasted a lifetime. Ed also enjoyed played racquetball for many years with many other players of all ages. In 1985, Ed took his family on the adventure of a lifetime and moved us to Libby, Montana. Ed loved Montana, and the rest of us grew to enjoy all its beauty, even when we lived 45 miles out of town in the middle of nowhere. Ed and his family moved back to Mount Vernon, WA in 1992. Ed retired from BNSF in 2008. Ed enjoyed woodworking and would make pen and pencil sets from exotic woods, as well as gorgeous furniture and hope chests. He was a pool player, mechanic, craftsman, and general Mr. Fix it. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was quite the prankster and joke teller. One of his biggest passions was fishing, his favorite fishing spot being the Clark Fork River. We are sure he is in heaven now, catching the biggest fish, as fisherman say. Ed met so many good people on his journey called life, many friends that he has kept for decades, he cherished those friendships, some from the Railroad, Baseball, Fishing, and even from High School. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving in addition to his wife Deborah McGrath, are his Daughters, Shannon McGrath, and her husband Juan Soria, Jenelle Wrede and her husband Dave Wrede, Darci McGrath, his Brother Jimmy McGrath and wife Sharon, his sister, brothers-in law and sister-in law and their spouses. Ed was also blessed with grandchildren (who referred to him as Papa), they stole his heart and most of the time all his attention, Samantha, Desia, Emma, Maximus, Diesel, Jacob, Livy, and Hazel, as well as many nieces and nephews. Due to covid restrictions, there will not be a service at this time. Those who wish to remember Ed in a special way may make gifts/donations in his memory to Hospice of the Northwest. Although Ed will be gone fishing forever, there is a plague in the veterans' section of Hawthorne Memorial Park, Mount Vernon, WA, so that we can pay our respects, and ask him to save us a seat at his fishing spot, when we meet again in Heaven.
