Obituary

Gary Leeroy Friend, 81, of Mount Vernon, Washington, passed away peacefully at home on March 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 11, 1944, in Snoqualmie Falls, Washington.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Donna; his son Chris (Leah); his grandchildren Dalton (Heather) and Megan Gonzalez (Saul); and his siblings; Larry Friend, Darlene Scott, Stacy Hermes (Steve), Candice Hamilton (Ed), and Brian Friend. He was preceded in death by his son Curtis Friend; his sister Carolyn Cox; and his parents, Alonzo and Juanita Friend. He also held a special place in his heart for his beloved aunt and uncle, Eve and Pauline Carlson, whose love and influence meant so much throughout his life.

Gary proudly served his country in the United States Army for four years. He dedicated his career to construction and was a proud member of the Operating Engineers Local Union 302 for 60 years.

Gary served as a Fire Commissioner for the Clear Lake Fire Department for 25 years and volunteered as a firefighter for 52 years. He also spent time responding with and supporting the Big Lake Fire Department. His commitment and service were recognized with the Clear Lake Fire Department Chief's Award on four occasions. Even after retirement, he continued to volunteer and support his fellow firefighters, helping with the rehab van and running the tender.

Gary was deeply involved in his church, Community Covenant Church of Clear Lake, where he faithfully served and led the "Making Room for More" project, ensuring it was completed under budget. His faith and commitment to serving others were evident in all he did. His faith in God was central to his life and he shared with confidence, "I know that where I'm going is better than here," a belief that brings comfort to those who love him. We take peace in knowing he now has a seat at a table far greater than we could ever imagine.

Gary enjoyed being part of many organizations, including being an active member of the Cascade Two-Cylinder Club, where he shared his passion for John Deere tractors. He was a lifetime member of the Friend Family Association of America and the Moose, and also a member of Skagit Valley Eagles #3242, the VFW, and the Puget Sound Antique Tractor and Machinery Association.

Gary had a deep love for his family, John Deere tractors, and traveling, visiting every state except Hawaii. He cherished his time with his tractor buddies and years of service with the fire departments, as he remained committed to volunteering even in retirement.

Gary created an extraordinary life and legacy. His presence is already so very missed, and we are incredibly blessed to have shared in the precious time we had with him.
