Obituary

Gerald A. Highet, 81, was born January 1933 in Chicago, IL. He was the second of four sons by Donald and Grace Highet. As a child, Gerald (Jerry) lived in many places including Chicago, Salt Lake City, UT and Peck, Idaho. After high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during the Korean War. He was a radio operator on board troop transport planes in Korea and this experience began his life-long passion for airplanes. Jerry met Pauline Lindemuth while stationed as an airman at Paine Field in Everett, WA. They soon wedded and started their family in Mount Vernon. With five kids to feed, Jerry took on several lines of work to support his family. Trucking ultimately became his passion and he sacrificed many years on the road to support his family. Jerry purchased Brown Line, Inc. in the early sixties as a one-truck operation with a hauling permit. The entire family contributed to the success of Brown Line trucking, but it was ultimately Jerry's hard work, determination, and charm that really grew the business. Jerry retired in the late 80's and began enjoying the things that really made him happy: serving his community as a Rotary Club member (recipient of Paul Harris award), piloting airplanes, boating, golfing, attending car races, fixing up old cars, and enjoying his kids and grandkids. Anyone who knew Jerry well enough knew he couldn't wait to be on the Puget Sound with his buddies or family catching salmon, shrimp, or crabbing. Whatever the catch, he gladly shared with others. His trademark smile and handshake made him so endearing to all that knew him. He experienced many ups and downs in life, like the loss of his Daughter Jill and his heart attack recovery, but his eternal optimism and sense of humor always shined through till the end. Jerry believed strongly in hard work and giving people second chances. A loyal friend and Father till the very end. He will be dearly missed. Jerry is survived by his brother William Highet (Fresno, CA); four sons, Jerry, James, John, and Joel; daughters-in-law Lyn, Sonia, and Shellie; and grandchildren Ian, Andy, Kelsey, Jay, Cameron, and Rayna. Donations can be made to the American Heart Association in Gerald Highet's name. A Celebration of Jerry's life will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2014, 3:00 pm at Hawthorne Funeral Home with a reception to follow in the Hawthorne Reception Room. http://honor.americanheart.org/site/TR/Events/General;jsessionid=C2DE23E33A921CA16392F710C918FF2D.app246a?pg=fund&fr_id=1030&pxfid=272204
