Obituary

Gislaug Berge was born April 6th, 1929 to Soren and Ella Strommen in Stongfiord, Norway. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at her cabin in Norway Park on Lake McMurray, March 6th 2007. She is survived by her loving husband Brynjulv (Gordon), daughter Greta, and son in law Mark Barney. Gislaug grew up in Norway and her life truly began when she met Gordon Berge at Voss Landsgymnas College in Voss, Norway. Gordon moved to Seattle after college to get established. He continued to correspond with Gislaug in Norway with many letters until she agreed to move to Seattle and become his wife on September 23rd, 1949. Gordan was born in Rugby, North Dakota but had moved to his family farm in Forsand, Rogaland, Norway at the age of two. On his return to the United States, he was soon drafted into the United States Marine Corps to serve in the Korean War. Gislaug moved with Gordon first to California and then to his final marine station in Kanaowe, Hawaii. You can imagine the culture and climate shock for Gislaug who hadn't been away from Norwegian soil before in her life. After Gordon's military service was completed, they moved to Seattle, Washington to continue their journey in life. July 17th, 1965 their daughter Greta was born and another chapter in their life began. The family lived first in the Capital Hill area, and then in the community of Ballard in Seattle. Although there were many strong Scandinavian ties in Ballard, they yearned for a place more like Norway. They found that place in a small community of Norwegian immigrants forming a neighborhood of summer cabins on the hillside above Lake McMurray called Norway Park in Mt Vernon, Washington. Gislaug, Gordan and Greta spent many summers at the lake cabin Gordon built for the family from the ground up. Gislaug and Gordon loved their life at the cabin and moved there permanently upon Gordon's retirement. Gislaug and Gordon had truly united together as one in their 57 years of marriage. Never was a cross word spoken between the two of them, nor toward any others. Gislaug was a wonderful homemaker and loved to cook many Norwegian specialties for the family. She also loved to knit and created the most beautiful Norwegian wool sweaters. Many activities at Norway Park were funded by the raffles that took place to win one of her lovely, intricate works. The people lucky enough to win one or receive one as a gift from Gislaug cherish them dearly. Gislaug was a private person and didn't let many people know she had courageously been fighting a four year battle with cancer. She is dearly missed. There will be a memorial for Gislaug on Monday, March 12th at 2:00 PM at:First Christian Reformed Church701 W. Blackburn Rd. Mount Vernon, Washington 98273.
