Obituary

Gwynne D. "Denny" LeGro, 90, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully at his home among family members on Friday, January 23. 2009. Denny was born in Ponca, NE July 13, 1918, son of Robert E. and Edyth "Scheffel" LeGro. The family divided and moved to Spokane, WA., where their mother passed away at an early age. Denny, his full brother and sisters were then raised by his aunt. Upon graduation from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, class of 1936, he enrolled at the University of Washington, lettering multiple years for the Husky varsity wrestling team and graduating with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, class of 1941. Denny then enlisted into the U.S. Army, attending officers candidate school, then served 3 years in the South Pacific until the end of WW2 as a Captain and commanding officer of the 2821st photo-mapping company of the 648th Unit Engineer Battalion (Combat), being later promoted to Major prior to honorable discharge. After the war, he was an engineer for Skagit County (1946-1947), County Engineer for Wahkiakum County (1947-49) and full-time City Engineer for Mount Vernon (1949-1955) and part-time city engineer for an additional 20 years. He was the principle in LeGro Engineering Co., LeGro and Judy, and later LeGro and Associates in Mount Vernon until recently when his health began to decline. Denny was active in church and community. He prepared the first General Engineering curriculum at Skagit Valley College (1955-56) to the standards of the University of Washington, teaching these courses at night school. He was a member of the local Lions International. Later, as building chairman for the First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, he was instrumental in the construction of the Division Street church. He also served multiple terms as the President of the Skagit Valley Family YMCA Board of Directors. Professionally, he was active in the Washington State Civil Engineers and Land Surveyors Association, serving also one term as president of the organization. He also coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for many years, playing a key role in starting and organizing Babe Ruth baseball in Mount Vernon. Denny enjoyed family and sports. He was a U of W Husky Tyee and Big W member and football season ticket holder for over 50 years. Many family Christmas holidays were scheduled around attending the Rose Bowl in the late 50's and early 60's. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hulda "Kehrli" LeGro, formerly of Cathlamet, Washington; his son Denny, daughter in law Barbara and grand-daughters Brittany and Kristen; sisters Phyl St John of Phoenix, AZ and Nita (Ray) Marsula of Mount Vernon and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents at an early age. He was also preceded in death by his half sisters and brothers: Florence; Orpha; Modiste; Freeman and James LeGro and his full brother Wallace. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Mount Vernon First United Methodist Church, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mount Vernon First United Methodist Church, Skagit Hospice or the American Diabetes Association.
