Obituary

Herbert Jean Grimes, Jr., 74, husband of Sandra of Mount Vernon, passed away on Friday, August 24, 2012, in his home surrounded by family. He had courageously fought ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) for the past two years. He was born on March 31st, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended grade schools in Newton and Kinsley, Kansas, and Nevada, Missouri. He graduated from Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1956. Herbert and Sandra were united in marriage on July 15th, 1961, in Wahoo, Nebraska. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter and two sons. Herb was employed by Boeing both in Everett, Washington and Wichita, Kansas, as a Quality Control Inspector. He also owned and operated a successful upholstery business between layoffs from Boeing. Herb's pastimes included golf and model trains. After his retirement, Herb and Sandy enjoyed traveling in their motor home around the country and to Arizona each winter to visit family and to attended Mariners spring training games. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at Saint Cecelia's Parish in Stanwood and was a past member of St. Vincent de Paul Society at Saint Mary Magdalen Parish in Everett. Herbert is survived by his loving wife of fifty-one years, Sandy; his daughter, Denise (James) Earl of Snohomish; his two sons, Kent (Sheri) Grimes of Camano Island and Michael (Eileen) Grimes of Lake Stevens; his eleven grandchildren; his two great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Jean Black of Cupertino, California and Marie (Wayne) Hurd of Liberty, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Mildred Grimes. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 29th at Hawthorne Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. Until 4:00 p.m. Rosary will be recited at Saint Charles Church on Wednesday, August 29th, at 7:00p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 30th, at 11:00 a.m. At Saint Charles Church, 935 Peterson Road in Burlington with a reception to follow. Interment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Park at 2:00p.m. The family would like to thank all of those who so lovingly supported Herb in his illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to either the ALS Association, Evergreen Chapter, 19115 - 68th Ave. S., Suite H-105, Kent, WA 98032 or Hospice of the Northwest, 819 S. 13th St., Mount Vernon, WA 98274.
