IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jacqueline Jean
Donovan
January 25, 1951 – July 3, 2017
Jacqueline Jean Donovan, age 66 passed peacefully on July 3, 2017 at her family beach cabin on Samish Island, Washington. She was born January 25, 1951 in Mount Vernon, Wa. to John "Jack" and Jeanne Martin. Jackie grew up in Mount Vernon, Wa. where she attended Mount Vernon schools. Upon graduating she attended Washington State University graduating with a teaching degree. She moved back to Mount Vernon to teach 4th grade at Jefferson grade school and ended her career teaching kindergarten at Madison grade school, a job she dearly loved.
After retiring, she enjoyed many years helping her daughter, son and grandkids in their classrooms at Bayview grade school in Burlington. She was very active in PTA.
Jackie always liked to tell the story of how she met her husband, Arnie. She saw him jogging and knew the best way to meet him was to "jog". She liked to say it was the first and last jog she has ever gone on. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage for the next 39 years.
As a child Jackie often visited her grandparents at their Samish Island beach cabin. This summer tradition on Samish Island continued with her parents and then with her kids and grandkids. She enjoyed 60+years of special friendships with her many Samish Island friends. She thoroughly enjoyed promoting fun get togethers on north Beach, such as the Samish Island Olympics, sand castle building contests, tide flat golf tournaments, Samish Island parade and many others. Jackie especially enjoyed her many summer vacations with family and friends on the island of Kauai as well as winter trips with friends in Phoenix, Tucson, Palm Beach and Oceanside, California.
Jackie and Arnie joined the Skagit Golf and Country Club in 1969 (wedding gift from her parents) and proceeded to enjoy many years of social activities there, but most important to her were the many new friends she met and enjoyed. She was active at the club serving on many committees. She did play golf, but often jokingly told Arnie when he returned home from a round of golf, "I can read a good book in the time it takes you to play 18 holes of golf"! Friday night pub nights at the club were a favorite time where she could interact with her many friends.
Jackie joined a bowling league with her girlfriends and made a trip to Tahoe to bowl in a tournament.
Jackie helped host Rotary exchange students from Australia, Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Holland, New Zealand, Japan and Brazil. She was always ready to volunteer when asked to help.
Jackie was preceded in death by her mother Jeanne Martin. She is survived by her husband Arnie, daughter Kelsey Jean Hanstead (friend Danny), son Arnold "Matt" Donovan, 2 grandkids Kyzie and Cruz Hanstead, her father John W Martin, brother John A Martin(Nancy), nieces Tara and Alayna Martin and many cousins.
A celebration of Jackie's life will be held Sunday, July 9th at 3:00 pm at the Skagit Golf and Country Club. Jackie requested open bar and food for her friends that made her life so enjoyable.
