Obituary

Janice R. Vail passed away peacefully on December 17, 2018 at her home in Mount Vernon, Washington surrounded by family. Janice was born on November 6, 1937 in Howard, South Dakota to parents Walter and Vera Genzlinger. She was the 3rd Sister of four. In 1956, Janice graduated high school and went on vacation with her parents to visit her older sister, Fern in Marblemount, Washington. Her young niece, Peggy, introduced her to Lawrence Vail and Janice never returned to South Dakota except for visits. Lawrence and Janice were married on June 6, 1957. They had three children: Cindy, Penny and Craig. In 1965 Lawrence took a new job at Hoh River Cedar Products, moving the whole family to the Forks area on the Olympic Peninsula. Janice and Lawrence raised their family in Forks Washington. Janice worked for the Forks Variety Store as a cashier and later at the Forks Elks Lodge as a book keeper. She was a member of both the Emblem Club at the Elks Lodge and a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Janice and Lawrence lived in Forks until 1996 when they moved to Tillamook, Oregon. There, Janice worked as a cashier at Sears selling appliances, then, as a book keeper at the RV park where they were living. While in Tillamook, Janice and Lawrence made many new friends. Their family loved visiting in the summer. Visiting the beach, the Newport Aquarium, and the Tillamook Cheese Factory were a big hits with the grandchildren. Janice and Lawrence moved back to Washington state in 2002 after they retired to Lake Cushman, where they lived until 2013. Janice enjoyed cooking new recipes, going out to eat with friends and cultivating her garden. They recently moved to Mount Vernon to be closer to family and avoid having to shovel snow in the winters. Family was always important to Janice, she and Lawrence hosted the annual family campout on Labor Day weekend from 2006 through 2017. We would all share good food, play many games and enjoy good company. Janice is survived by her sisters Fern Merrit and Karen Vail, husband of 61 years Lawrence Vail, daughters Cindy Hokanson and Penny Eklund, son Craig Vail, and in-laws Martin Hokanson and Lois Lugg, grandchildren Melissa Ross, Jason Eklund, Amy Pole, Luke Eklund, Erik Hokanson and Andrea Duvil, eight great grandchildren and one great great grandson, Janice is preceded in death by her parents Walter and Vera Genzlinger and her sister Donna Schneider. The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 1:00PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, Washington.
