Obituary

Jean Margaret Hogg Jansen was born to John Alexander and Frances Beatrice Hogg in Vancouver, Washington on March 30, 1914. The oldest of seven children, she graduated from Vancouver High School in 1931. She was involved in music, often as piano accompanist, and worked in the Vancouver Public Library for a number of years to earn money for college. Mrs. Jansen graduated from Western College and taught at the Avon Elementary School from 1941 - 1945. On March 25, 1943, she married Willem (Bill) Jansen who had immigrated from Holland and was employed in the Skagit Valley bulb industry. She returned to education in 1955 as the first lay teacher at Immaculate Conception School. She formed lasting friendships with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Newark and touched the lives of many children. She kept in touch with her former students and appreciated their communication and visits. They often commented about her gentle, nurturing manner, while encouraging them to achieve their personal best. She retired as librarian in 1986. Mrs. Jansen was an avid reader and appreciated sharing books with her friends at monthly Coterie book club meetings. Her other hobbies, included exquisite counted cross stitch projects, crossword puzzles, gardening, flowers, classical music and bird watching. She is survived by her daughters, Diana Jansen of Mount Vernon, WA, Nancy (Jock) McIlraith of Orting, WA; sisters, Nancy (Thorton) Perry of Los Alamitos, CA and Marilyn Meissner of Seattle, WA; brother, Robert Spencer Hogg of Larkspur, CA; sister-in-law, Pollee Hogg of Phoenix, AZ; brother-in-law, Frank Nims of Sherwood, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was cherished by her four grandsons, Rob (Jana) McIlraith of Eatonville, WA, Scott McIlraith of Puyallup, WA, Brian (Kate) McIlraith of Moscow, ID, Sean McIlraith of Moscow, ID; and two great-grandsons, Reilly and Connor. She was preceded in death by three siblings, John Emerson Hogg, Richard Hogg, and Betty Nims. The family wishes to thank Dr. Johanna Santos, the Mountain Glen staff, and Skagit Valley Hospice for providing our mother with special care. The also thank Jane West, Marge McIlraith, Maureen McCarthy and Sister Angela McCarthy for their special friendship. Viewing will be held Friday, February 19, 2010, 3:00pm until 5:00pm and Monday, February 22, 2010, 9am until 11:00 am at Hawthorne Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 11:30am on Monday, February 22, 2010 at Immaculate Conception Church, followed by a funeral mass. Graveside services will be held at Hawthorne Memorial Park, followed by a reception at St. Joseph Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made to Skagit Hospice, PO Box 1376, Mount Vernon, WA 98273 or American Heart Association , 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231.
