IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joan
Crawford
January 15, 1933 – October 9, 2022
Joan Jenkins Vague Crawford went to her Lord and Savior on October 9, 2022. She was born in Burlington, Washington on January 15, 1933.
Joan's parents moved around for work during her early years so she attended several elementary schools. Her family eventually settled in Sedro Woolley where she graduated from high school in 1951. Joan loved music and was a member of the Hugo Helmer accordion band while in school. After high school she went on to graduate from Skagit Business College.
Following business school, Joan took a job at Skagit Steel as a bookkeeper. During this time she met Dale Vague at the Seven Cedars Dance Hall in Mt. Vernon. They were married in 1954 and had 5 children. Dale and Joan started several small businesses including Verry Best Eggs, The Burlington Farm Store, and Similk Beach Oysters. Joan also worked many years at Allwest Select Sires as a bookkeeper until her retirement.
After Dale's passing in 1985 Joan was invited to take square dancing lessons where she met Jack Crawford. They were married in 1988. Together they enjoyed family gatherings, traveling in their motor home with the Skagit Squares, and attending WSU Cougar games.
Joan was always active in the community. She volunteered at church, started a Girl Scout Troup, was mother advisor for Rainbow Girls, and took up the accordion again to join the Hugo Helmer Alumni Band. Joan was as a member of Eastern Star and had the honor of being chosen Grand Representative to Kentucky. In her spare time Joan was an avid reader, and she enjoyed gardening and doing embroidery.
Joan is survived by one brother; Frank (Alma) Jenkins, five children; Karen (Mark) Perkins, Susan (Doug) Nemo, Sharon (Jack) Sanford, David (Linda) Vague and Colleen Vague; four step-children; Jay (Susie) Crawford, Kim (Mark) Gebhardt, Jill (Scott) Teernik, and Kevin (Ivi) Crawford. She has 10 grandchildren; Phillip (Kayla) Schwabe, Justin (Paige) Schwabe, Breanne (Will) Shorthouse, Joni (Tyler) Bruhn, Erica (Delbert) Lewis , Matt Vague, Jordan (Matt) Pszonka, Colton and Alyssa Sanford, and Owen Hamblen, along with 8 step-grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Joan is preceded in death by her parents Angus and Zona Jenkins, husbands Dale Vague and Jack Crawford, and her granddaughter Jael Hamblen.
A family celebration of Joan's life was held Tuesday, Oct. 18th. Memorials may be made to Creekside Assisted Living in Burlington where she enjoyed the last several years of her life.
