Obituary

JOHN B. HUNTER was born in Tucson, Arizona on April 2, 1950 to John W. Hunter and Janet L. Bartee. He passed away in Bellingham, WA February 27, 2013. John graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1968. He moved to Valdez, Alaska as a young man and began working for Copper Valley Electric Association (CVEA) as a Plant Operator in 1974. He became Chief Plant Operator in 1981 over Solomon Gulch Hydro Plant, Cogeneration Plant and Valdez Diesel Plant. In 1998 he joined management as Power Production Superintendent before retiring in 2012. John was recognized for his work in receiving the statewide Hatcher- Williams- Turkington award on August 12, 2010 for exemplary service to his electric cooperative. He is described as having "left finger and toe prints throughout CVEA". His coworkers and friends describe John as a fountain of knowledge in power generation; a legend; a leader; honest; direct; loyal; supportive; kind and having a subtle sense of humor that brought laughter to many. Family was important to John. He enjoyed photography and videography and creatively worked with both. He spent many an hour appreciating the beauty of the land and animals of Alaska. He was preceded in death by his father John W. Hunter. He is survived by his beloved daughter Fara Hunter and her son Jacob Bicknell Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas; sisters Fawn (Robert) Chichester of Mt. Vernon and Rebecca (Wayne) Dorcas of Bellingham; niece Carrie Hartz of Port Orchard, nephews Shawn Hartz and Scott (Doe) Hartz of Mt. Vernon and great nieces and nephew. Fly high with the eagles John, we will miss you. Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.
