Obituary

John Massar Youngquist passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2012, at Life Care Center in Mount Vernon after an extended illness. John was born at Skagit Valley Hospital on March 28, 1941, to Iver and Marjorie Youngquist. John was the youngest of two children, and is survived by his sister Marge Ekstrand. John attended grade school, and high school at Burlington Edison, and was very proud of the traditions of being a Tiger. He also attended Washington State University for a short time, leaving to join his father and family back on the farm in Bow, Washington. John married Janet Lang in 1960, and had three sons, John, Jeff and James, all of whom reside in Skagit County with their families. He was a dairy and crop farmer the majority of his life. Through farming, John knew everyone and then some. Whether it be as a friend, business acquaintance, employer, or as someone he just met, John positively affected a lot of people in Skagit Valley and beyond. His family and friends were most important in his life. He spent a number of years on the Burlington-Edison school board, served on the boards connected to The Farm Crops Association and The Holstein Dairy farming Association, and was involved in many ways with local and community issues, especially connected to farming. He worked until he was 69 and never really retired from his life of farming. He was an avid football fan, from playing as a Tiger and Cougar, to being a season ticket holder for the Seahawks. John was also a big fan of sprint car racing, and spent many nights watching his son, and then grandson race on tracks all over the Northwest. John is survived by his wife Donna; his sons John and wife Shelley, Jeff and wife Kelly, James and wife Stacy; his six wonderful grandchildren, J.J., Trisha, Justin, Kindsey, Jasper and Daisy; his sister Marge Ekstran and husband Garner; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and stepchildren from previous marriages. John's family would like to thank all of the kind words during his recent illness from friends, family, and acquaintances, and also the staff at the Life Care Center in Mount Vernon who went above and beyond in their care of John M. Youngquist. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 18, 2012, 11:00 am at Allen Methodist Church in Bow. Memorial may be made in John's name to the American Diabetes Association.
