June Rose Breitag Hudson, born August 31, 1929, in Saginaw, Michigan, passed away peacefully with her family and friends by her side at Skagit Valley Hospital on Sunday, June 15, 2008. She was 78 years old. June was born and raised in Michigan (Go Blue!) and graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1947. As a young woman, June worked for the telephone company and started her lifelong commitment to volunteering by visiting and entertaining at local nursing homes. She met Walter Doyle Hudson in 1950 and they were married on May 17, 1952, in Saginaw, Michigan at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. June was a career military wife as Walt was in the Air Force for 28 years. They lived in Nevada, Michigan, Iowa, West Germany, Mississippi, Colorado and Washington tate. June was always able to make friends and coordinated gatherings wherever they were. Walt retired from the military in 1976 and they made their permanent residence in Mount Vernon. June started working at Immaculate Conception Regional School in 1979 as bookkeeper and later became the school secretary until retiring in 1994. Mom would tell you that she ran the school and not many would argue. She loved all the students and staff and was sure to know all of them. Most recently she filled in at the Parish office, helping the bookkeeper. June was a very active member of Immaculate Conception Church, serving on many committees, helping with funeral arrangements, and ironing the church linens every week. June also volunteered for the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation working on the Festival of Trees committee, and volunteering at the front desk at the hospital. A good day for June would be lying in the sun in her tube top, with a cup of tea, her crossword puzzle book, a trashy novel and the phone. June will be remembered for her quick wit, her legendary poems and songs, her never ending devotion to the Michigan Wolverines and her snorting laughter. She was an avid reader, visiting the library at least weekly. She loved a good (or bad) joke and watched Keith Olbermann regularly. June is survived by her husband of 56 years, Walt at the family home in Mount Vernon (along with Rudy, the dog); four daughters and three sons-in-law; Virginia Hudson and Brian Martin of Berkley, Michigan; Mary Hudson of Mount Vernon; Nancy Hudson and Nick Carlson of Bellingham; and Barb and Mark Kaufman of Mount Vernon; the light of her life – her grandchildren: Jim Martin, Maddie (her little sweetheart) and Jillian Kaufman, and Ben and Adam Carlson; brothers and sisters-in-law Darrell and Lenora Hudson of Mount Vernon, Carol Hudson of Marysville, Wanda Haugstad of Mukilteo, and Kent and Maryann Hudson of Kirkland. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews here in the Northwest and in Michigan. June had many good friends; foremost was Carol Luvera of Mount Vernon; we consider Carol's family, our family. Preceding her in death her were her parents, her two brothers and two sisters, her parents-in-law and brother-in-law, Duane Hudson (and Fritz, the dog). The family would like to thank the staff at Skagit Valley Hospital for caring for June, especially Allyson and Kriss. Memorials may be made to the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation/Cancer Care Campaign or Immaculate Conception Regional School Library Fund. A Rosary will be held Thursday, June 19, 2008, 6:00 pm and a wake from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm at Hawthorne Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, June 20, 2008, 6:30 pm at the St. Joseph Ceneter.
