Obituary

Kathryn Marie "Kathy" Cherry passed away on June 25th at Lifecare Center of Sedro Woolley after a courageous 2-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.  Kathy was born Sept 17, 1952, to Vince and Mary Dragovich in Anacortes Washington.  She attended school in Anacortes, graduating in 1970 from Anacortes High School.  Her family was very involved with the Croatian Club of Anacortes and went to the dinners all her life.  Her, her brothers, and her kids all danced at the club growing up.  Kathy welcomed her first son, Matthew Vincent Stewart on August 30, 1972, her second son, Joseph Stewart was born January 14, 1976.   She was a stay at home mom until the boys were old enough to stay on their own.  Kathy married Mike Cherry on May 5, 1984.  Brian Cherry, step-son, moved to her and Mikes home in 1989 at the age of 15 and immediately became one of her boys.  Kathy got her perfect job in 1986 as Secretary at the MVPD for the Chief of Police and Drug Task Force.  Kathy ran the police department for over 30 years, ask anyone who worked there during that time and they will tell you she was in charge.  Kathy loved her family and friends as well as her PD/City of MV family.  Kathy enjoyed trips to the casino with Mike, eating out at numerous local restaurants, although Mexico Café was her favorite.  She loved talking for hours on end in person or on the phone with all those she loved.  She enjoyed going to her kids, grandkids, and friends' kids sporting events where she was known as Candy Grandma with her big bag of treats for all the children (and some adults).  She was big fan of Seahawks, Mariners, Huskies, Sonics (when they were around) and Gonzaga Bulldog Basketball.  Always watched the games on TV.  More than anything loved being around her family and most importantly her grandchildren.  Her grandson, Marcus Stewart was born in 1999 and granddaughter, Brandi Stewart in 2001.  Kathy was preceded in death by her father, Vince Dragovich and her younger brother, Lynn Dragovich.  Kathy is survived by her mother,  Mary Dragovich; her husband of over 40 years, Mike Cherry; her oldest son Matt Stewart and his longtime girlfriend Tiffany Vopalensky and her two boys,  Blake and Jase Vopalensky; her youngest son, Joe Stewart and his wife Lori Stewart along with their two children, her grandchildren, that were the twinkle in her eye Marcus and Brandi Stewart; step-son, Brian Cherry; her brother Michael Dragovich and his husband Mike Gaitley.  Mom was kind, funny, loving and generous to a fault and will be missed by so many who she let be a part of her life.  We all love you mom.  A funeral mass will be held Thursday, July 25, 2024, 12:15 PM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon.  A Celebration of Kathy's life will be held on Sunday, July 28, 2024, 1:00PM-4:00 PM at Bertelsen Winery.  In lieu of flowers you can donate to a PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy) Charity in her name.  The family would like to thank the staff at Lifecare Center of Sedro Woolley and the members of Hospice Northwest who helped her through the hardest times at the end.  We would also like to thank Kirk Duffy and his team at Hawthorne Funeral Home for making that part of it so comfortable.  Please share you thoughts of Kathy and sign the online guest register at www.hawthornefh.com
