Kenneth ( Ken) Charles Vanderhyde, a beloved husband, cherished Dad, Grandpa, genuine friend, and teacher to many, passed away peacefully surrounded by family after an 8 year battle with Parkinson's on September 26, 2023, at the age of 88 in Mount Vernon, Washington. Born on December 9, 1934, in Snohomish, Washington, Ken's unwavering dedication to his family and his genuine nature touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Kenneth known as Ken, Kenny, Mr. V, or Van, was a pillar of strength and a caring presence in the lives of his loved ones. He will forever be cherished as the piano man, whose music echoed through the hearts of his family and friends, bringing laughter and comfort.
Left to honor Ken's memory is the love of his life, his wife of 57 years Sharon (Irwin) Vanderhyde, who stood by his side through the joys and challenges of life and was a true hero to the family as his caregiver keeping him at home until his last day. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his children Lance Vanderhyde (Kelly), Rob Vanderhyde, and Heather van der Gaag (Fred). His sisters Carol Porter (David), Cindy Prince (Bill), Patti Leavitt, brother and sister-in-law Selby and Jean Irwin, sister-in-law Jane Irwin, brother-in-law Darryl Nelson
Also missing him already are the luckiest grandchildren and great-grandchildren JaNae ( Camron) , Brandon ( Emily) , Zac ( Nea) , Brittney ( Tom) , Grace ( Isaac ) , Faith, Riley, Savannah , Conner, Carli ( Jerad) , Brayden, Victor, Kyler, Orion and Jade. As well as many nieces , nephews and cousins.
He was proceeded in death by his Mom Elizabeth Williston, Dad Bev Vanderhyde (Anne), Step- Dad Frank Williston, Sisters Ann Nelson and Laurie Bashour as well as his brother in law George Irwin and mother-in-law Marge Irwin.
Ken's educational journey began at Snohomish High School, where he laid the foundation for a lifetime of learning. He began his college education at Western Washington University, where he obtained his teaching degree and furthered his education at Central Washington University where he obtained his masters and principal's degree.
As a Veteran Ken proudly served in the Navy during the Korean War on the USS Catamount LSD -17, exemplifying honor and dedication. His military years held a special place in his heart, and he took great pride in having served his country and continued as a loyal member of the VFW and American Legion.
Throughout his professional life, Ken made a lasting impact as a favorite teacher at Mount Vernon High School as well as Jefferson and Washington Elementary. He committed himself to shaping the self esteem of many young people and making school a fun, safe place to be. Ken was also a basketball coach, making sure his students made it to games and practices even when parents were unable to take them and encouraged kids to believe in themselves on and off the court.
He continued a friendship with many of his students until the day he passed.
Ken was also a music teacher and believed that every student should have the chance to learn. Often taking items in trade instead of money from families that couldn't afford to pay for lessons.
In addition, he served as a PUD commissioner 1982-1988, demonstrating his dedication to public service and the betterment of his community.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Ken was incredibly social and loved to have long phone conversations with his friends and was always the life of the party. He had a love and true caring for all of his friends and earned the title "adopted brother" by many in his life. An avid Seahawks and Mariners fan, he cheered on his beloved teams with unwavering loyalty. He also had a passion for collecting old cars, finding beauty in an old car left in a field and took pride in making it shiny and appreciated again.
A time of viewing will be held on Monday, October 9, 2023, from 10:00am to 4:00pm at Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, WA.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at 2:00pm at Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, WA with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Ken's memory to the Parkinson's Foundation or a charity of your choice. May his legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to community and family challenge us all to laugh more and enjoy life everyday.
