Obituary

Lois Ann Meyer, a long time Mount Vernon resident, passed peacefully at the Country Meadow Village retirement home in Sedro Woolley on Monday, February 23, 2026 surrounded by family.  She was 95 years old.

Lois was born on July 5, 1930 to John and Irene Bratz in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.  Lois and family moved to Washington State in July, 1935.  Lois attended several Mount Vernon grade schools and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1948.  In addition, she attended Mount Vernon Junior College (now Skagit Valley College) for one year after high school.

In high school, Lois was one of four school cheerleaders for three years and was ahead of her time as an active participant in the few girls' sports offered back then.  Lois was also President of the Girls Green M Club her senior year and a member of the Tri-Hi-Y Club.

Lois married Richard Meyer, her high school sweetheart, on December 16, 1950 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon.  She went to work for the Carnation Company as an office clerk.

Richard entered the Marine Corp. in March 1952.  He went through boot camp in San Diego, CA.  He served time as a clerk at Camp Pendleton all the while living in an apartment on the beach in Oceanside, CA with Lois.  Lois would always say these were the best two years of her life.  Richard was discharged in March 1954 and he and Lois returned to Mount Vernon.

Over the next few years, Lois and Richard had three children, John, Tom, and, Marilyn.

In the early years, Lois and Richard and family went on many boating and fishing adventures in the San Juan Islands with friends and their families.

Richard and Lois started Meyer Heating in October 1968.  Richard handled the mechanical end of the company while Lois took care of the business side.  At least, until 1974, when the business operation became too much for one person to handle.  They sold Meyer Heating in October 1995, but the goodwill built up over the years continues to this day.

Lois and Richard were involved in regular and numerous Class of 1948 high school reunions, always helping plan and execute the varied events and keeping in touch with classmates, both those who lived locally and those who did not.

Lois and Richard had many friends in Mount Vernon.  They would get together often to celebrate birthdays, special occasions, or just to visit, have coffee and dessert, and catch-up.  And every Sunday morning after church, Lois and Richard would join the "Breakfast Club" at a local restaurant that changed over time.

Lois was a 90-year member of Immaculate Conception Church in Mount Vernon.  For many years, she was active in the St. Louise Guild, the Altar Society, and as a weekly money counter.  She became one of the oldest living members of the church in her later years.

Lois was a member of the Skagit Golf and Country Club for over 40 years.  She was an avid golfer participating in many tournaments and winning many awards.

Lois also loved playing Bridge whenever she could.  For much of her life, she participated in at least two monthly Bridge Club gatherings, taking her turns hosting.  In later years, she played regularly at the Burlington Senior Center and even at the retirement home in her 10 months there, where, according to staff, she is credited with reviving the game among the residents.

For ten years in their 70s, Lois and Richard wintered in their park model at the Voyager RV Resort in Tucson, AZ.  Lois would keep busy playing golf and cards in the park, while Richard kept busy with projects in and around the park model.

Like her mother, Lois was a great cook and often hosted family gatherings and holiday celebrations.  She was also talented at crocheting.  Each new grandchild and most of the great grandchildren were greeted upon arrival with a beautiful hand-made afghan for their crib.

Lois was a terrific grandmother, always helping with babysitting, overnight visits and adventures, and Christmas and birthday gifting.  She continued to remember her grandchildren and great grandchildren's birthdays every year right to the end of her life.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Richard, her son, Tom, her parents, John and Irene, her sister, Shirley, brothers-in-law Ted Dubenic and Fred Minahan, and, sons-in-law Cory Cole, and most recently, Galen Kindred.

She is survived by son John and wife Karen of Everett, daughter Marilyn Kindred of Sedro Woolley, and several nieces, nephews and first cousins.

She leaves behind eight grandchildren:  Melissa Roller (Tim) of Lake Stevens, Mike Meyer (Sarah) of San Diego, CA, David Meyer (Aimee) of Snohomish, Steven Cole (Presley) of Sedro Woolley, Megan Cole (Marion Rowlan) of Mount Vernon, Matthew Cole (Kiley) of Stanwood, Dusty Kindred (Dena) of Sedro Woolley, and Krista Mejia (Cory Blankenship) of Sedro Woolley.  Lois was also blessed with 17 great grandchildren.

Special acknowledgement and appreciation go to Lois' caregiver, Kerri, when Lois was still in her home, good neighbors, Joe and Marilyn, and Marija, cousins, Dave and Scherry, and the wonderful staff at Country Meadow Village.

Memorial donations in Lois' name may be sent to the Immaculate Conception Church Building Fund (215 N. 15th St., Mount Vernon, 98273).

A Funeral Mass for Lois will be celebrated on Monday, March 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 400 N. 15th St., Mount Vernon, 98273, followed by burial at Hawthorne Memorial Park.
