Obituary

Marie Theresa McComas , 85, of Mount Vernon, WA went to be with our Lord on July 25, 2016. She passed away peacefully at Skagit Valley Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Marie was born on February 6, 1931 in McLennan, Smoky River, Alberta, Canada to Joseph and Eva LaBerge . Marie's f amily moved to the Yakima Valley in her teens and settled on a farm in Prosser, WA, where she attended high school. On June 14, 1947 Marie married her best friend and beloved husband of 65 years, Robert James McComas. They had four children; Diane (Charles) Williams of Medford, OR, Sherri (Ted) Cole of Sedro Woolley, WA, Christy (Steve) Smiley of Birch Bay, WA, and Michael (Marsha) McComas of Leavenworth, WA.  They were blessed with 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Bob and Marie made their home in Sunnyside, WA, moving to the Skagit Valley after retirement to be closer to family. Marie worked as a secretary for the Roza Irrigation District, and later for the St. Joseph Catholic Church and School for 6 years, at which time she took a position as office manager for Dr. P.J. Swofford where she remained until she retired in 1994. Marie always enjoyed people and prided herself on remembering their names. She was always friendly, interested, caring and eager to help.

After they retired Bob and Marie became snowbirds for several years, enjoying spending part of the year living in their RV in Arizona. Some of their favorite RV travels included large family camping trips to Lake O'Sullivan at the Pot Holes. They loved fishing and spent many hours together on the boat, both alone and with their grandkids. Grandma and Grandpa Great (as the great-grandkids called them) were very active in the lives of their grandkids, rarely missing a sporting event or music concert.

Marie had the heart of an adventurer and a young spirit. She traveled with family to Turkey, and Alaska. She was an avid reader, and she shared her love of a good book with her children and grandchildren. She was always curious and pursued many diverse hobbies over the years, including photography, painting, gardening, beading and fishing. Marie loved learning and was always an early adopter of new technology, being one of the first to get a home computer, and even becoming a busy eBay seller in her 70's. Bob and Marie shared their love of cards with all of their children and grandchildren, and Marie was well-known for her skill at word games. She was a competitive Words-With-Friends player even in her final days. Marie enjoyed sharing her interests with her friends at the Logan Retirement Community where she happily resided the last two years of her life.

Marie is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob, daughter Diane Williams, and son-in-law Ted Cole.

Marie and Bob attended the Clear Lake Community Covenant Church , and the family requests that donations be made to them in lieu of flowers. There will be a memorial next summer at Lake O'Sullivan to celebrate Marie's memory (more info to come), and a graveside service at Union Cemetery where Marie and Bob will be interred together.
