Obituary

Marjean Fox, age 92, passed into her heavenly home on Monday, August 17, 2015 in Anacortes, Washington. Born on October 31, 1922 in Bromide Oklahoma, she was the daughter of James Lafayette and Di Altha Holmes Martin. She was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, attending Franklin Elementary School (where she wrote the school song in her 6th grade year), Wilson Junior High, and Central High School before graduating from Will Rogers High School as part of the first graduating class in 1940. Marjean loved music and pursued it from an early age. She was singing professionally even in her high school years, and went on to host various radio shows at KTUL in Tulsa in the 1950's and 60's. She traveled with USO Tours to entertain the troops during WWII and the Korean Conflict, and had her own dance band (Marjean's Hi-Society Five) that was very popular around the Tulsa area in the 60's and 70's. She also worked as a model and as a secretary, especially through her Civil Service certification, until her music career took off. She was employed at McDonald Douglas aircraft in Tulsa where she met Fred Fox, a mechanical engineer. They married January 31 1944, and recently celebrated 71 years of marriage. While she had opportunities to pursue her music career, Marjean's husband Fred was the love of her life, and she devoted herself to him and raising their three children above her career. She juggled kids, house work, band rehearsals, booking the band, and singing on the band stand before working wives and mothers was the norm. The Foxes relocated to Casper, Wyoming in 1975 and to Burlington, Washington in 1977 as Fred was transferred in his job of 35 years with Texaco Refining. Marjean and Fred joined Avon United Methodist Church, and mom began playing piano there, a ministry she loved and devoted herself to for the next 30 years. Fred and Marjean developed many wonderful friends and memories from their Avon church family. Marjean is survived by her husband of 71 years, Fred, and three children: Fred A. (Rick) Fox, Jr. (and wife Rosie) of Centennial, Colorado; Jim Fox (and wife Becky) of Anacortes, and Diane Fox Bobko (and husband John) of Burlington, as well as seven grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family whom they adopted as their own. A public Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at Hawthorne Funeral Home, with a reception following.
