Obituary

Mark Lloyd Nelson, age 65, of Mount Vernon, WA, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2023, with his family at his side after having been recently diagnosed with lung cancer. He was born on August 27, 1957, at the Rowley Hospital in Mount Vernon to Glen and Irene (Demers) Nelson. He was the youngest of five siblings, attended Immaculate Conception Regional School, and graduated from MVHS.

Mark and Catherine (Kitty) were married on February 27, 1988, in Mount Vernon.  Next month would have been their 35th wedding anniversary. They had two daughters, Caroline (Carrie) and Jacqueline (Jackie).

Mark worked with his father in refrigeration in Alaska for several years. After moving back home, he joined Central Moving & Storage where he assisted families who were relocating across the country. Wanting to stay closer to home after his first daughter was born, he began driving for Alpine Distributing which eventually became Columbia Distributing. Mark had recently retired after 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Carrie, sisters Julie and Glenda, and father-in-law Donald Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Kitty; their daughter, Jackie, and her partner, Ryan; brothers Mike and Dave, as well as Dave's wife Diane; brother-in-law Steve, and his wife Darlene Lyle; mother-in-law Caroline Curry-Smith and many nieces and nephews.

He was an avid and skilled woodworker, as well as a lifelong learner of the cosmos. Mark and his family loved skiing, camping, hiking, and relaxing at the beach. He also enjoyed TV shows such as Star Trek, Eureka, and Firefly. We are thankful for the excellent care given to Mark through the holidays at Skagit Valley Hospital. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends, as well as his cat Olive that loved to, in his words, torment him and their dog Piper.

At his request, no services will be held. In place of flowers please give to the charity of your choice.
