IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Martin Robert
Speedy
December 30, 1956 – July 2, 2023
Martin Robert Speedy, 66, of Mount Vernon, Washington, passed away on July 2, 2023. He finally
entered a pain-free world full of light and freedom after a long struggle with CIDP and renal
failure.
Martin was born December 30, 1956, in Tucson, Arizona to Bob and Sharon (Norby) Speedy.
As part of an Air Force family, he spent most of his early childhood traveling around the country
and abroad with his siblings and parents. After retiring, Martin's father moved the family and
settled in Mount Vernon, Washington where Martin began his freshman year at Mount Vernon
High School. During the next four years, he was active in sports, the arts, ASB, and other high
school projects graduating in 1975 with a scholarship to Harvard University.
Martin was a loving, hardworking, and complicated soul, as we all are, with a soft yet stubborn
side. His love of the fine arts, problem solving, working with his hands, and flair for design lead
him to open Dusty Dreams, an artisans' consignment shop (where the Mount Vernon Food
Coop is currently located). He envisioned and built the mezzanine inside his store in order to
create more space for displaying many artists' wares.
After closing Dusty Dreams, Martin turned his focus to his construction business, Martin
Speedy Construction DBA Vintage Builders and became well known for his attention to details,
perfectionism, ability to envision and articulate finished projects before they were even initiated
when working with clients. Sadly, he had to close his business in March of 2020 due to his
illness.
Martin will be remembered by his family and friends as always willing to lend a hand when
needed 'at the drop of a hat'. His love of animals and the less fortunate were always present in
his life. When he got together with his siblings there was no end to the funny stories told about
growing up in the various places they had lived.
His sister Leslie recalled a story after laughing with Martin about it in his last days at the Life Care Center,
"When the movie A Christmas Story came out, I could relate to many parts, especially
the bundled-up brother. I was always worrying my little brother would fall and that I
wouldn't be able to get him back up. Martin told me he actually stuck his tongue on a
pole in the cold as a teen on a dare. He only got the tip of his tongue torn, but the other guy put his entire tongue on the pole! A good laugh by us both that morning! "
Martin was preceded in death by his parents, two aunts, an uncle, and his mother and father[1]in-law.
He is survived by his wife Sandi of 31 years, sisters Leslie Speedy, Katie Speedy, brother Eric
Speedy, niece Mandy McCoy, nephew Tyler (Molly) Schumacher, great-niece Freda McCoy,
great-nephews Leeroy and George Schumacher, brothers-in-law Todd (Kim) Thompson, Tim
Thompson, his loyal friends Steve Stolpe and Kevin Kok, and his loving mini schnauzers Dakota and Utah.
You were loved Martin and will be missed.
