Mary Martha Batterberry (Kastel)


Mary was born to Ray and Clara Kastel (Laqua), April 21, 1941 in Kandiyohi Minnesota. She attended grade school in Spicer, Minnesota and attended Willmar High School in Willmar, Minnesota. In 1957 Mary, her parents and siblings moved to Burien Washington where she graduated from Highline High School in 1959. In September of 1959 she married Robert Batterberry at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Seahurst Washington. After moving back to Minnesota, Mary and Robert returned to Washington settling in Mt. Vernon and eventually Burlington. Where they raised their two sons, James and Kevin. Mary worked for Skagit Valley Hospital and Skagit Regional Clinic as a medical transcriptionist.

Mary and Robert were travelers. They visited many states and lived in San Antonio, Texas for a time. They visited every state in Mexico except for two, by car. They  traveled thru Central and South America as well. She also made a trip to visit Ireland. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, camping, canning, working her garden and doting on her two sons. She also enjoyed a bingo game or night at the casino.


Mary is survived by her sons James, his wife Alejandra, Kevin, his wife Lisa. Her grandson Sean, his wife Janelle and Mary's great granddaughters, Paiten May and Charli Ann. Her granddaughter Emily Marie. Grandson Devon Bernard and great grandson Lincoln. Grandson Dusty and his fiancé Katie. Her sisters and brothers in law Carol Broderson (Dennis), Rosalie Mushsta (Jim), Diane Brower (Bob), sister Therse Largerquist and brother in law Mark Schinman. Her sister in law Barbara Whaley (Richard), brother in law David Batterberry (Leslie). Numerous Nieces, Nephews and cousins.

She is proceeded in death by her husband Robert, parents Ray and Clara, her sister Kathy and brother Joesph, brother in laws Dan and Steve. Mary was loved by everyone and will be missed by all.
