Obituary

Mary Sheila Hart, affectionately known as Sheila, passed away on December 10, 2025, in Mount Vernon, Washington. Born on May 11, 1943, in Norwich, Connecticut, Sheila led a rich and engaging life marked by devotion to family, community, and the many pursuits that brought her joy and fulfillment.

Sheila’s early years were spent in the nurturing environment of Ray Brook, New York, where she grew up alongside her sisters Heather and Barbara, and their parents Francis and Frederica White. Their family home was uniquely situated on the grounds of the State Hospital for tuberculosis, where their father served with distinction as a physician, assistant director, and eventually director. The family cherished the serene lake life, relishing mornings filled with freshly caught trout and venison from their father’s bow hunting. Their mother’s culinary expertise was a source of comfort and celebration, reinforcing the close-knit and vibrant familial bonds. Artistic endeavors and community-centered events were a regular and enriching part of their lives, fostering a deep appreciation for culture and togetherness.

Sheila pursued her education at SUNY Plattsburgh following high school. Her path then led to St. Louis, Missouri, where she found secretarial work and a meaningful connection with Bruce Brown. Their relationship blossomed and soon brought her to Mount Vernon, Washington, where they married in Kalama, Washington. Together, they enjoyed many years of marriage enriched by shared passions for fishing, boating, and the simple pleasures of life. During the 1980s, Sheila earned the honor of being Ms. Mt. Vernon and served with dedication in secretarial roles for City Hall and the Police department. Upon retiring in 1993, Sheila's life entered a joyful new chapter through her marriage to Robert Terry, Detective Sergeant. They embraced their years together with warmth and adventure, dividing their time between winters in Bisbee, Arizona, and Maui, Hawaii.

Sheila was beloved for her warmth, wit, and genuine nature, traits that brought light and sincerity to every room she entered. Her talents extended to the culinary arts, where she delighted in her accomplishments as a cook. An avid walker and regular practitioner of strength training, Sheila maintained an active lifestyle that reflected her passion for health and vitality. She was also a devoted traveler who treasured attending theater and symphonic events, further underlining her engagement with the arts. Known for her friendliness and ease of conversation, Sheila treasured her numerous friends and acquaintances, who often welcomed her spontaneous visits and enjoyed her spirited company.

A proud member of several organizations, Sheila contributed to the community through Skagit Valley College’s Senior Fitness program, Recreation Without Borders, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. These affiliations underscored her commitment to wellness, inclusivity, and service.
