Obituary

Oliver Berentson passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025. He was born November 14, 1933, in Pemberton, Minnesota to Ida and Sanford Berentson. He was the youngest and only male of four siblings. They moved to the Skagit Valley and attended Anacortes schools, Mount Vernon High School (1951), and Skagit Valley College. He enjoyed music, dancing, played the trumpet, and sang in choir. Oliver enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and liked to tell tales of his youth.

Oliver served in the Army from 1955-1956. He was a member of the 6th Infantry Division and was stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. He was trained as a medical aidman and was an expert rifleman.

Oliver did many jobs throughout his life. He had his own business doing small engine repair. He worked for the Department of Natural Resources and led crews on forest fires. He worked as a maintenance supervisor in several jobs including Northern State Hospital, Josephine Sunset Home and Skagit County Fairgrounds.

Oliver was a lifetime member of the Mount Vernon Moose Club. He served as governor and was a representative for their Moose heart organization. Oliver spent many holidays cooking and serving dinners for members and people in need.

Oliver married his first wife, Joyce Gonderman, in 1959 and had two children, Cheryl (Chris) Felt, and Brian (Marlaine) Berentson. Oliver met and married Evelyn Danforth in 1985. Oliver gained four stepchildren, Diana (Byron) Kurtz, Ron Moena, Connie Carpenter, and Mark Moena. Oliver is survived by his wife and children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren (who knew him as Papa), nieces, nephews and cousins. He was proceeded in death by his four sisters Pearl, Lorraine, Iola, and Betty and his son, Brian.

Oliver was known for his quirky sense of humor and generous heart. He was a devoted Lutheran and attended Salem Lutheran Church. A memorial for Oliver will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7th at Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon.
