The incomparable Peggy Jann Johnson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away on June 1, 2013. A longtime Skagit Valley resident, Peggy will be remembered for her humor, beauty, compassion, tenacity, creativity, kindness and many talents. Peggy was born on January 11, 1944 in Richland, Washington to Janice (Davis) and Augustus "Gus" Lewis. She was a popular, involved member of Richland High School Bomber Class of 62, known for her dramatic flair. She was always proud of and close to her three brothers: Michael Lewis (Seattle, WA - RHS Class of 60), Steven Kelly Lewis (Richland, WA - RHS class of 70), Sean Lewis (Puyallup, WA - RHS Class of 77). After graduating from Richland High School, Peggy married Art Stendal and in 1963, she welcomed her first daughter, Pamela Grace Stendal (Minneapolis, MN). In 1969, Peggy married Greg Hinton, a union that produced daughters Holly Theresa Hinton (Seattle, WA) and Jennifer Jann (Hinton) Schubeck (Mount Vernon, WA). Peggy loved her daughters dearly and took great pride in their accomplishments. The love of her life and longtime partner, Dr. Gary Lloyd Johnson DVM, arrived in 1983. Gary and Peggy were married at the Pilchuck Glass Center in 1989. Their time together was full of shared passions, nature, family, friends, love and lots of laughter. An affectionate and inspiring couple, Gary's devotion to Peggy has been a blessing to us all. Throughout her life, Peggy excelled at and reveled in her many hobbies and interests including: her gardens - which have always been epic; cycling - she completed two 150-mile rides; hiking - a passion she enjoyed with Gary and her dogs; art - Peggy's career as a visual artist yielded beautiful etchings, drawings and paintings (her unique pet portraits were cherished by friends and clients alike); animals - Peggy's lifelong love of animals began as a child and throughout her life, they were ever-present (horses, goats, chickens, dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, ferrets, even a brief stint caring for a skunk!); music - Peggy taught herself to play both piano and guitar; the performing arts - Peggy danced and sang in numerous musicals and local theater productions; community activism - for many years, she was decorator-in-chief of the annual Skagit Valley College Foundation Auction; and she was a brilliant hostess and entertainer who delighted in gathering her favorite people together for special moments and celebrations. Over the years, Peggy touched the lives of many with her talents as hairdresser, dance teacher, homemaker, artist, aerobics instructor, advertising sales manager, real estate agent and finally, manager of the Highland Animal Clinic in Mount Vernon (her husband Gary's veterinary practice). She adored her grandchildren, Augustus "Gus" Schubeck (13) and Violet Josephine Hebb (4) who will always remember her as magical, wacky, playful and loving "Nanny Peg". Peggy is also survived by the following, treasured family members: stepson Jeremy Johnson (Dallas, TX), his wife Erica and their new baby boy, Thaddeus; cousin Suzanne Cowan Dimeff (Rancho Santa Fe, CA), nephews Ryan Lewis (Richland, WA), Sam Lewis (Puyallup, WA) and Marc Lewis (Puyallup, WA), niece Andrea Butterworth (Los Angeles, CA) and her husband Jamie and son Jett. Peggy also leaves behind legions of dear, dear friends - whom she cherished immeasurably. They will always wish they had more time with Peg. She was a true partner and friend to all. She made friends easily. Those who were fortunate enough to know her, even briefly, were left with a joyful remembrance. The family would like to thank the staff of Ashley Gardens (Mount Vernon), who cared for Peggy in her last months. Peggy was 69 years old - indeed a young soul - and she left us far too early. A celebration of Peggy's grand life will be held at the Hillcrest Park Lodge on Tuesday June 25 from 4-7 pm. All of her friends and acquaintances are encouraged to attend and to bring their favorite Peggy stories to share.
