Obituary

Richard Eric Blomberg (Dick) passed away peacefully on May 29th, with his family by his side. Dick is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Wendy Lee Blomberg, his oldest daughter, Kelli-Anne B. Nielsen, wife of Henrik B. Nielsen and their two sons, Alec B. Nielsen, husband of Brooke L. Nielsen and Austin-Richard B. Nielsen, and Dick's son Eric Blomberg, father of Zak Harker. Dick loved his family and was extremely proud of them. His grandsons were the light in his life and held a special place in his heart - he lit up every time he was with them.

Dick was a self-made person, putting himself through college and graduating from Washington State University with a bachelor's degree in business and finance. Everyone who knew Dick also knew he was a devout Cougar and proud of his accomplishment to be the first in his family to attend college and graduate from a university.

Dick met Wendy Emery when they worked together at Seafirst Bank in the late 60's. Dick proposed, and they married in 1970. Dick was known for his generosity and would often bring flowers home to his wife, setting a great example for his kids. Dick spent much of his career in banking as a commercial lender, branch manager and commercial banking team lead, eventually becoming a senior vice president in banking. He was also the founder of I-5 Auto World in Burlington, WA.  He retired from the Business Bank of Skagit County in 2012, a career which spanned 60 years, and which was always a source of pride. Dick loved helping people, he took risks on the character of people, first and foremost, and his family continues to hear, "it was Dick Blomberg who took a chance on me when no one else would. It is because of Dick I own my own business."

He was passionate about the game of golf and for 50 plus years, you could spot him every Wednesday on the golf course. He was one of the original members of the Skagit Golf and Country Club, joining in 1968. He was fiercely competitive and shared his passion for golf with his kids and grandkids.

Dick was a twenty-year boating enthusiast and he and his family would explore and boat through the San Juan Islands. Deer Harbor, Rosario, and Roche Harbor were three of his favorite spots to hang out on the weekends. He was particularly fond of family summer vacations in Desolation Sound in Canada, with family and friends, enjoying crabbing, fishing, and playing on the water. His family shares great memories on the boat, named the Kelli-Anne after his beloved daughter.

Dick enjoyed helping people, fishing, golfing, boating, chocolate chip cookies, rock-n-roll, and hanging out in the golf cart with his grandkids. He was a bright spot in the business community for years and will be remembered for his smile, firm handshake, and the love he had for his family.

Dick's family will celebrate his life on June 24th at the Skagit Golf and Country Club from 2-4. Wendy and Kelli-Anne will set up a scholarship to help kids annually participate in the junior golf program through the Skagit Golf and Country Club. Dick believed every kid should learn the game of golf and every kid should also tuck in their shirts, put away their divots and demonstrate good sportsmanship. The Dick Blomberg Scholarship is a commitment from the family for ten years. If you would like to donate, there will be a scholarship box set up to contribute at his celebration of life.
