Obituary

Richard (Dick) L. Johnson passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, beloved ones at his side.

Dick was born on June 24, 1921 in Ferndale WA, to Tillie A.(Smith) and Frank C. Johnson, the youngest of 4 children.

The family moved to the Mount Vernon area when he was a young child, where he was raised on a small farm west of town.

Dick graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1939, and later received an Associate Degree from Skagit Valley College, before joining the Army during World War II to head a medic supply unit.

After his service, he moved to Seattle and married his first wife, Jean Chandler, where they enjoyed living and working. Following the birth of their first child Marcia in 1950, they returned to Mt. Vernon to a home he built near the Skagit River.

Richard joined his father in the insurance business, later become an agent for State Farm Insurance, then developed and ran a successful agency for 30 years.

After his retirement at the age of 66, he pursued his true passion full time into his 90s – fishing, hunting, and trap-shooting. Dick excelled as an avid fisherman, starting at a time when catching a 50-pound King Salmon in the Skagit River was still possible - a feat he was proud to have achieved.

He was an active member of Ducks Unlimited, loved bird hunting, was an expert marksman and an accomplished trap shooter - winning numerous awards, including the PITA US Western Region Overall Championship in 1993

The longest standing member of the Moose Lodge in Mt. Vernon, he served as governor, and was awarded the fraternity highest honor of Pilgrim Degree. He started the Moose Lodge Gun Club, which he managed and maintained for years, allowing many young children the opportunity to learn gun safety.

Dick married his second wife, Trudy Long/Wing in 1968, becoming a step-father to 2 sons and a daughter. They shared 45 years of marriage and family until her passing in 2014.

He was preceded in death by his wife Trudy, his mother and father, his brothers

Frank C. Jr. (Charlotte) Johnson and Walter (Margo) Johnson, and sister Eileen (Clarence) Summers.

He is survived by his daughter Marcia Johnson and son-in-law Barry Margolese of Seattle and Camano Island, stepsons and daughters-in-law – Theron (Earl) and Mary Dee Wing of Mt. Vernon, Stan and Missy Wing of Sedro-Woolley, step-daughter Kim Marquette of Sedro Woolley, 11 grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren.

Dick will forever be in our hearts, his independent spirit an inspiration always to his family and friends.

A memorial service to honor Dick will be held at Hawthorne Chapel on College Way in Mt. Vernon at 2:00 PM on Saturday December 9, 2017, with reception following.
