Obituary

Roy John Etter Roy, a long time resident of Anacortes, passed away November 7, 2007 at Skagit Valley Hospital with family by his side. Roy was born October 2, 1925 in Delia, Alberta Canada to Chris and Isabella Etter. As a young boy his family moved to Pasadena, CA. and later settled in Anacortes at March Point at the very site where Texaco, now Shell refines oil. He attended Fidalgo Grade School on March Point and graduated from Anacortes High School in 1943. After graduation he served in the Army's 11th Airborne Division in the Pacific theater of World War II. Shortly after discharge he married Patricia June Potter and raised two children, Jim and Shelah. For a brief time he worked as a log boom operator and later found a better job at Whidbey Island Naval Air station as a steam plant operator. When Texaco Refinery located at March Point in 1958 Roy was a natural choice for the steam generating plant. He was employed with Texaco for 35 years until his retirement in 1993. At that time he was the longest-serving employee of the refinery. Roy served as an officer and organizer for the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW). He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Summit Park Grange. He enjoyed commercial fishing, hunting, traveling, his family and friends. He is survived by his son Jim Etter (wife, Lynette), daughter Shelah Inman (husband, Fritz), grandchildren Brandon Etter, Angie Etter, Melissa Harris (husband, Ryan), Michael Inman and great grandson Alex, all of Skagit County. He also leaves behind a niece Phyllis Perry of Canyon, Texas a nephew Gary Irby of Federal Way, WA. and many longtime friends. Roy was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister Margaret. Viewing will be held Tuesday, November 13, 2007, 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and Wednesday November 14, 2007, 9:00 am until the Memorial Service, 1:00 pm at Hawthorne Funeral Home. The family wishes to thank the many special caregivers who cared for Dad along his journey. They also acknowledge the special care and kindness given to him at Skagit Valley Hospital in his final days.
