Obituary

Sarah Adelaide Dale, age 102, passed away in her sleep on November 5, 2008. She was born in Matsqui Prairie, B. C. Canada to William and Nellie Dale and was preceded in her death by two brothers, Edwin Francis Dale of Clearwater, FA and William Morris Dale of Whidbey Island, WA. At an early age, her family moved to a farm on Fir Island where she attended school. Later, the family moved to Mt. Vernon and then to Seattle where her father, a marine engineer, was stationed. They moved to Everett and Adelaide attended school at the old Jefferson, Jackson and Central Schools throughout her grade-school years. She attended Everett High School and attended Bellingham Normal for two years of teacher training. By attending summer school, she received her B.A. degree from Western Washington University in 1925. She was recently celebrated as a member of the Golden Vikings Alumni Association and the oldest living graduate of Western. Adelaide taught in several Skagit schools and Auburn, WA schools. She moved to Alexandria, Virginia and held the position of County Supervisor of Fairfax County for 16 years. Before she retired, Adelaide was a consultant for the Encyclopedia Britannica, traveling to classrooms throughout the US demonstrating and assisting in implementation of a model language program. After retiring from education, Adelaide loved her volunteer work at hospitals. At Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, FA she became Chairperson of a teaching and training position in the Information Service Area. When she moved to Silver Lake, WA she volunteered in the surgery waiting room area at Everett General Hospital, keeping family members informed about the progress of surgical patients. Her favorite time was when she got to be in the operating room and watched an open-heart surgery. Adelaide resided at Cascadian Place Retirement Home in Everett, WA for the last five years and most recently resided in Renton with her nephew Robert and wife Sharon Dale. She is survived by her two nieces, Gretchen Dale of Ketchum, ID and Jessie Hammond of Lake Oswego, OR and her three nephews Robert Dale of Renton, WA, William Dale of Big Fork, MT and Peter Dale of New York City, NY. Adelaide was an accomplished woman with a wonderful outlook on life. She will be greatly missed by all people whose lives she touched. Services will be held by Reverend Rand O'Donnell at the Hawthorne Mortuary in Mt. Vernon at 1:00 P.M. on November 15, 2008. Internment will follow at the Mount Vernon Cemetery.
