IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sidney Cornelius
Deboer
March 12, 1931 – September 16, 2023
Sidney (Sybolt) Cornelius DeBoer went to be with the Lord on September 16th, 2023. Sid was born on March 12, 1931 in Sneek, Friesland, the Netherlands to Cornelis de Boer and Agnes de Boer (van der Meulen). Sid was the youngest of five children. His siblings were Sybren, Anne, Markus, Maaike. He was the only family member to immigrate to the United States in 1950. Sidney (Sybolt) went to America, with the steamship Veendam, when he was just 18 years old. He turned 19 on the boat to America.
Normally the journey took ten days, but due to a storm the journey took four days longer.
In the Netherlands it was said that the boat was in trouble. Sidney (Sybolt) knew this so he sent a telegram home twice to reassure his family in the Netherlands. The boat came to a standstill in the Atlantic Ocean. The people of the first class had to go downstairs.
In America he went to work for his uncle Walter de Boer and aunt Sadie de Boer. Sadie de Boer was a sister of Sid his father.
Sidney stayed with his Uncle Walter and Aunt Sadie in lowa for the first year. There he worked on his uncle's farm.
In 1952 he met his first wife Wilma (Willempje) Berghorst in Iowa. They were married in April 1952. They then moved to Artesia California with his cousin (Julia) who married a farmer in California.
He worked there for four years as a farmhand from 1952 to 1955 to begin dairy farming.
Later he started farming in La Conner Washington, 1955. He farmed in La Conner for 7 years. They had their first son Cornelius (Neal) Sidney DeBoer July 24,1956. And in 1963 Sidney (Sybolt) started farming in Burlington where their farm remains to this day. He continued to dairy until April 2022.
His parents (Pake Cees and Beppe Agnes) visited him in July 1965. They were with him for 3 weeks. Sybolt has had several tractors, most of them from the John Deere brand. He has also owned various (Hatchers) harvesters from the German brand Claas. They were so proud of all he had accomplished here in America as it was not something you could have done in the Netherlands.
Sidney and Wilma then welcomed Mary Ann in May 1967. His marriage then ended with Wilma in June of 1975. Sidney traveled many times back to the Netherlands with family and friends where he was able to take his son and daughter to meet his relatives.
Sid later married Jean Geddis in May of 1976. They enjoyed traveling worldwide and spending time with their families. Sid continued dairy farming and was active in many industry groups and church leadership. He was a pioneer in the dairy industry in the valley always enjoying being progressive with all the new technologies. He was a very well-known man who is leaving a legacy behind. He was a member of the Alger Christian Reformed Church for many years. Sid is survived, by his children Cornelius (Neal) DeBoer, Mary Johnson (Diane Fuller), Skip (Judy) Geddis, Kathy (Les) Whitehead and Andrew Geddis. He is also survived by his grandchildren Aaron (Mackenzi) DeBoer, Rickey (Rena) Peters, Rebecca (Devin) Fox, Lisa (Adam) Lewis, Lynne (Hugo)Juarez , Jeff (Kimberly) Whitehead , Elizabeth Whitehead, Katelyn Whitehead and Lexi Geddis along with many great grandchildren that he loved dearly.
A graveside service will be held at Hawthorne funeral home, Mount Vernon, WA on Saturday September 23, 2023 at 11:00 AM. A celebration of life will follow at Mount Vernon Christian Reformed Church at 1:00 PM.
Proverbs 9:9-12 says:
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser, teach, a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of my life shall be increased. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
And lastly, we want to thank Visiting Angels, specifically Michelle who has worked above and beyond. She has been by Sidney's side for the last 6 years.
