Obituary

Thomas H. LaPointe March 16, 1963 - July 7, 2015 Regarded as an admirable captain and jolly good friend, Tom passed away suddenly at age 52 in the wheelhouse of a fishing vessel in Alaska. Tom grew up in Kennebunk, Maine where he first learned his love of fishing. After adventuring across the U.S., he moved to the Pacific Northwest in the late 80's, settling in the Skagit Valley to build his family. Tom worked various fishing vessels in the Bering Sea for nearly 30 years, with particularly fond memories of captaining the F/V Alaskan Command. He was an avid outdoorsman and history buff who truly loved ice climbing, rock climbing, backpacking, and spending time with his family and friends. Preceding in death were his father William F. LaPointe, father in-law Glen C. Edwards, sister in-law Susan K. Edwards, and nephew Jesse Edwards. Survived by his beloved wife of 23 years Jill (Edwards) LaPointe, treasured daughter Susan LaPointe, mother Florine LaPointe, brother James LaPointe, and mother in-law Ethel Edwards. Lovingly remembered by Kathy (Edwards), Jarl and Clayton Hogseth - Jodi (Edwards), Tony and Hannah Chase - Lea Edwards, Ava and Jacob Whyte - Sondra (Edwards), Lou, Easton, Sophia and Maddox Hazim - Nancy (Edwards), Earl, Jade and Ryan Myer - Sandy (Edwards) and Roger From - Michael, Cathy, Mike and Molly Edwards - Carol, Noel, Kara, Brent, and Kamden Edwards. Tom would extend a no-fuss, deep appreciation to all friends and crewmembers who shared his life's journey with him. He would tell you not to waste your time mourning him, but rather to enjoy all you can do in your life. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Susan LaPointe's education fund online at www.youcaring.com/susanlapointe. Donations may also be mailed to Hawthorne Funeral Home and Memorial Park, P. O. Box 398 Mount Vernon, WA 98273 with special attention to Susan LaPointe. A memorial service will be announced at a later date, possibly in the fall when fishermen and women have returned home. Our gratitude and love goes out to all crewmembers of the F/V Royal Viking and a special thanks to Trident Seafoods.
